Edges

AB: Psionics

.This Edge is rare and not well understood. It is  treated with suspicion, generally, as it has all the  appearances of magic to the untrained eye. Most  characters with this Edge are alienists, mesmerists,  or psychoanalysts. Trappings tend toward using  mesmerism or sheer willpower to alter others’  perceptions rather than altering reality, although  some powers—such as telekinesis and fly—allow  the user’s mind to cause physical effects.

Rippertech

To paraphrase Friedrich Nietzsche “beware  when fighting monsters lest you become one.” Your monster-to-be may start with up to half  her total Reason in rippertech (round up). This reduces Reason the appropriate amount

Mentalist

Constant contact with  multiple minds gives  these psionic agents an  edge when it comes to  forcing or resisting mental  assaults. Mentalists add +2 to opposed Psionics rolls, whether  they are using their powers  against a foe or defending  against a rival

Sterner Stuff

When this hero has rippertech implanted,  the surgeon gains a +2 bonus to his Knowledge  (Rippertech) roll due to the subject’s phenomenal  constitution, raw willpower, or fierce determination. In addition, the Ripper adds +2 to all Vigor  rolls required when using extractions (including attempting to use multiple concoctions).

Two-Gun Kid

Two-Gun Kid works just like Two-Fisted, but with ranged weapons, allowing her to  fire or throw a weapon in each hand as two  different actions but without triggering a  Multi-Action penalty. If the character has Two-Fisted, the second  action may also be a melee attack

Ambidextrous

Your warrior is as deft with his left hand as  he is with his right. He ignores the Off-Hand  penalty.

If holding a weapon in each hand, Ambidextrous characters may stack Parry bonuses  (if any) from both weapons.

Sidekick - "Elijah"

A character who triumphs over evil time and  time again becomes an inspiration to others.  Eventually, one of these young crusaders may  attempt to join the hero in his epic quests

Tough As Nails

Your character keeps going when others  fall. She can take four Wounds before she’s Incapacitated (her maximum Wound penalty  is still −3).

Followers - "Animus"

Each time this Edge is chosen, five followers  come to fight by the hero’s side. If any are lost,  others eventually take their place (how long  is up to the GM and the circumstances). Followers must be cared for and generally  want a share of whatever loot, treasure, or other rewards the hero acquires. Otherwise, they are completely dedicated to their task.  They won’t throw their lives away but are  willing to risk them repeatedly in his service

Alienist

A rare thing in Victorian times, a hero with this  Edge is sympathetic to those who suffer from a  damaged psyche. This hero can heal temporary  Reason loss in a patient.

Trademark Weapon - "Stalker Knives"

The hero knows one unique weapon (Ex. Excalibur, Old Betsy) like the back of  his hand. When using it, he adds +1 to his  Athletics (throwing), Fighting, or Shooting  rolls, and +1 to Parry when readied (even if  it’s a ranged weapon)

Hindrances

Notorious (Minor) - Eccentric/Openly Gay

Your hero is renowned for being something of  a rogue or scoundrel. People in the same social  circle are wary of being too closely associated with  such an individual for fear of being tarred with the  same brush. As a result, all costs are doubled for the  Notorious hero when trying to call in a Favor

Cursed (Major) - Witch Curse

Your heroine crossed some dark power and has  forever after been marked by its tainted touch. Your  character may never receive beneficial blessings  such as those from the Arcane Background  (Miracles) Edge

Supernatural Weakness (Minor) - Sunlight

This hero has acquired a weakness to some  material akin to those suffered by many of the  monsters the Rippers fight. Perhaps your hero was cursed by a witch, or scratched by a monster in a  previous encounter.

A hero with a Supernatural Weakness cannot  use that substance and cannot stand to touch, or  be touched by it. Weapons made from it inflict +4  damage on the hero.

Shamed (Major) - Warsaw Incident

.Something haunts your adventurer.

As a Major Hindrance, his deed is well-known—or at least known among those  he cares about. The other player characters  should be told the tale as soon as possible (preferably at character creation). If not, it  should be revealed by nonplayer characters  at some point, and occasionally used  against the hero.

Ugly (Minor) - Eye Scars

Attractive people get all the breaks. This  unfortunate individual isn’t one of them. He subtracts 1 from his Persuasion rolls.

Background

Before the Rippers

Born on January 21st, 1838 as Giovanni Moretti in Northern Italy.

Joel is the only son of his upper middle class parents and grows up Catholic. Gains an interest in helping others and is sent to college in Britain due to good grades. Does well in college, focusing on his schoolwork. Parents are slightly concerned due to Joel's lack of want to find a wife. He shrugs them off explaining he prefers his work which they accept. Eventually people acting strangely piques his interest and in investigating the area in which they supposedly experienced their trauma runs into another young man named Elijah Atkinson. They agree to work together in their investigations.

Joining the Rippers

25 (1863) - Joel joins the Rosicrucians along with his freelancer friend Elijah shortly after graduating college with a doctorate in alienism.

26 (1864)
- Gets his first piece of Rippertech, Lymph Graft. Originally for good intentions as alienists are needed to help Rippers handle their trauma and he wanted to stay around as long as possible.

28 (1866) - During his first major case, he has his first run in with Ripping Psychosis in which his psionic abilities manifest along with being  cursed with his "sun allergy" and his "evil eye" coloration. He telekinetically pins down the witch and shoves his thumbs into her eyes.  He takes her tear ducts and has them implanted as a trophy.

The Warsaw Incident

35 (1873) - Implants Infernal Fascia, weeks later the stress at the lodge in Warsaw he was currently staying at comes to a head.  He was trying to convince a 1 Reason Ripper to retire which ended up in a shouting match that attracted the rest of the team.  Which turned into a massive fight, the stress causing the patient he was had been treat to suffer Ripping Psychosis.

A massacre occurs in which he is the only survivor due to killing the rest of the Rippers.  Joel's internalized trauma has him associate his Rippertech as the only reason he is still alive and without it he is weak.  He begins to slowly indulge in drinking, drugs, and Rippertech extracts to handle the stress and trauma of the massacre.

Elijah is the only person that he allows to talk  to him while on his forced leave to handle his mental instability from the massacre.  Over time gain the nicknames "Murderous Moretti", "Mori Moretti" and "Mori"_ which has him change his name to Joel Albrecht due to trauma.

40s (1878) - Is bounced around from lodge to lodge. The organization not wanting to keep him in one place for too long due to stigma of _"Mori Moretti"_. They have him treat patients then move him after a week or two. Is in constant contact with Elijah through letters or meetups at the cottage in England when they have breaks.

The Siege of Castle Dracula

50s (1890s) - Around age 52 is assigned to the siege of Castle Dracula as a medic/alienist. Shortly before the siege loses contact with Elijah who hadn't returned a letter in some time after informing him of a new assignment he was on. Joel was assigned to siege as medical/mental assistance but is kidnapped and tortured by Renfield in Castle Dracula. He is rescued by another team assaulting the castle and joins in to assist. Rarely anyone aside from the group he joined survives the battle.

Reputation over the years.

50s (1890s) - The amount of people that know him directly as "Murderous Moretti" has lessened. Some people know that Giovanni Moretti is Mori Moretti/Murderous Moretti but it's considered a sort of "boogeyman" and think that Mori Moretti is to blame for lodges tearing themselves apart. Most know Joel is bad news. But not many people put it together that he is Giovanni Moretti. New members don't know and some older members haven't realized cuz it was so divorced from them.

Blurring The Line

Age 55 (1893 to Early Spring of 1895) -  Meets Mox after being one of a long line of Ripper employed alienists to attempt making progress with the shattered man's psyche. After multiple sessions, Joel makes a connection with Mox and makes him a new Rippertech arm as part of treatment. Over the course of them working together,  the line between patient and lover is blurred heavily.

Spring of 1895 - Works with Rippers named Hakai and Phineas for a few months. Gets along well with Phineas even after learning the man's secret.

Late Spring of 1895 -Had grown close to Mox, but when approached to make their relationship even more after a small case had gone poorly, Joel refused (possibly out of fear) causing a huge fight between the two. They break off their relationship, which prompts Joel to get some of the most invasive Rippertech he's gotten so far (Hellfire Synapses).

Reassignment To The Wolves' Den Lodge

Fall of 1895 - Has been assigned to the Wolves' Den in France. He meets with the lodge during their assignment in Paris. Has gotten Aethereal Form from vampire blood and lost his left arm from being mauled by a werewolf. Due to the horrible way the Paris case went as the witnessed the resurrection of the Cabal Leadership, Joel is in a dark mental state.

Reunited

Early Winter of 1895 - Reunited with Mox, which didn't go well. Eventually his want to stay away from the man cause Mox to betray the Wolves' Den after his reunion with his long lost friend Elijah. Mox was executed for his betrayal.

Removed his Lymph Graft after a heartfelt talk with Elijah, during with they confessed their feelings for each other without overtly saying so. Their lodge was compromised due to Mox's betrayal which caused the town to be razed. However the remainder of the lodge managed to save majority of the town. They temporarily relocated the villagers and met up with another lodge for safety. Victor Hawthorne's body was stolen during the attack.

Christmas Day 1895 - The Wolves' Den leads a counterraid on a Cabal hideout after one of their members is kidnapped. They don't find him there but have a method of getting to where he is, Frankenstein's Factory. They rescue both Victor Hawthorne and Terrence Jones from Frankenstein and Porter's control.

Rehabilitation & Victor's Resurrection

Once back at London, Joel with Elijah's encouragement and moral support finally begins therapy. The shock and reason loss during the Frankenstein Factory raid on Joel caused him to begin hallucinating that Mox was haunting him for his mistakes. It's slow going but with some banishment and exorcisms as part of the treatment it helps with his delusion somewhat, lessening the intensity of said hallucinations.

New Year Winter 1896 - After some therapy for those of us who need it, the group meets with all of the Faction leaders. Stress and being egged on during the discussion about his medical license/alienist career causes Joel to admit that he had slept with Mox and vent his frustrations at the leadership of their and other alienists' failure to handle Mox/James properly (before Joel's own relationship with the man went bad). The talk ends with Joel's license only being temporarily suspended with the catch that he continues his therapy.

Joel assists Ilia and Kinta with the surgery on Victor to remove the mechanical implantations that Frankenstein had added. It goes well as does Kinta's resurrection attempt with her Blessed powers.

A Ripper Wedding

January 1896 - The recovery time gives Joel time to think over his and Elijah's relationship. He takes the blood ruby necklace that had been given to him by Mox and reforged into a cross necklace and rings for himself and Elijah. He also decides to go to Dr. Webb (scientist in their lodge) to finally do something about his lack of a left arm. It takes most of the afternoon planning with Dr. Webb, eventually the augmentation surgery goes well. Joel gains a metal augmented left arm with the capability to carry throwing knives in his arm.

Joel has a courier leave a note for Elijah:

"Could you meet me in the Chapel at?  I want to talk to you about something.  - Giovanni  PS. Wear something nice."

He also requests the services of Father A in organizing a private marriage ceremony. Father A is amused at Joel being flustered and agrees. Joel waits for Elijah at the small chapel in the lodge, making sure for Father A and one of his paladins are hidden until the time is right.

Once Elijah arrives, Joel has been waiting and turns to face him. The other man is worried and the use of Joel's real name has him worried. Joel comforts and reassures his friend and in a flustered manner proposes to Elijah, who is caught by surprise but eagerly accepts stating "No time like right now. Yes." They put on the rings that Joel had made.

Father A comes out of hiding and runs through his own version of marriage rites, declaring the two older men to be husband & husband. They leave together to celebrate with drinks.

Beginning of The End

Joel, Ilia, and Phineas return Dorian's Gray's painting. Joel is uncomfortable and is disgusted when he sees what Dorian truly looks like via Phineas' magic item that reveals it. They interrogate Dorian before leaving, Joel declaring "His dick wasn't that good and that he is married." at Dorian's disappointment of Joel's removal of his Lymph Graft.

Ilia is offended that Joel didn't invite him to his and Elijah's wedding, promising to plan a proper one after the war is over.

They then go to Jekyll's old lab to investigate, Phineas having a panic attack due to memories of the night he was dosed. This concerns Joel gravelly and he goes to have a private chat with Jekyll. He learns information that greatly shifts his priority to help Jekyll with his condition to no longer wanting to help the doctor at all, even threatening his life as he leaves.

A day or so later the Wolves' Den agree to steal Jekyll's painting from his old home as Phineas thinks the Cabal leadership's phylacteries is like Dorian's, and that Jekyll's is there. Joel uses his Aethereal Form to go invisible and picks the lock of the home while Phineas has Jekyll's old friend distracted at lunch elsewhere. Joel feels something isn't right when he approaches the painting, realizing it's a ghost guarding the painting. Knowing he doesn't have much time before his invisibility wears off, he backs off, rips the painting off the wall telekinetically and runs out, ghost after him. It chases him then the rest of the group before Joel manages a psionic blast that destroys the spirit. They check the painting and it is Jekyll's phylactery, the painting underneath the fake looking wounded.

Fall of London

One week passes and winter has gotten worse. Ilia receives a package with his name, smelling of roses and wine. Inside is a letter from Dracula and a vial of poisoned high vampire blood. Ilia gathers the group for a meeting and informs them of the package. Joshua snitches to the Harkers. Apparently he was misinterpreting our intends moving forward, and after telling the party everyone gets mad at him. Ilia talks to the Harkers after and clears the situation as well as he can.

Phineas proceeds to use the pipe [his foreseeing pipe] to try and locate each of the Cabal Head’s paintings and tries to figure out the identity of the mole in Rippers. He is nearly blinded by the flash of white light in the vision and is unable to figure what that means. Jekyll asks to see Phineas who realizes that all the prisoners in the London HQ are free and so is Jekyll.

The London Lodge is under attack by all the Cabal leaders and their respective minions. Father A is revealed as the mole as he kills Jonathan Harker in front of everyone as Jonathan was proclaiming that he's had a breakthrough with the cure for the Hyde Serum.

The Wolves' Den holds back the Cabal leadership while a extraction portal is opened and people are rushed through. Everyone except Joel (at the pleading of Elijah) chooses to stay and fight a losing fight. Joshua is killed by Dracula, who then takes Ilia away. Phineas is killed by Edward Hyde. Lorelei, Kinta, and Victor are taken by the Vampire Lords that Kinta made a deal with in Paris Catacombs.

After extracting through the portal, Joel realizes that the portal was a one way blind hop and believes that he left the rest of his lodge to die.

Resistance Ripper

Mid to Late January

It’s been a week, more or less, and Joel's been working with a ragtag group of Rippers, effectively their leader. Found out the portal spat them out in Prague. A Cabal hit squad tracks them down again while they are hiding in an abandoned brewery, to which they fight and with some difficulty fend off the attackers.

Joel and Elijah have a talk about their options. Their group has been attacked 4 times in the last two days and they are running low on food, energy, and places to hide. Joel rallies the group after remembering the Demon hideout they had raided before rescuing Victor is in Prague. They head there hoping for a safe spot, supplies, or information.

They arrive at the hideout, finding The Writer there (the surviving demon from the Prague hideout raid) looking for his manuscripts. The writer wants not to die. Joel wants information to keep people safe and get back at the cabal.

They start hashing out a deal.
Elijah and Joel agree to give up half their soul each in order to gain knowledge and power necessary to fight the good fight.
Joel gets an extreme Psionics boost, as well as a bunch of information regarding the other's locations and the remaining faction leaders being attacked. Joel and Elijah agree to rest and wait for the remaining Rippers of their group to arrive at the safe spot.

That night Joel has dreams sent to him by Ilia (who is stuck in Dracula's castle), which give him more information on the remaining Ripper Faction leaders. He isn't happy when he figures it is in Poland, but will go anyway.

Broken but Back Together

Early to Mid February 1895
Joel, Elijah, and the members of Animus travel mostly by foot from Prague to outside of Warsaw, Poland. They encounter "Phineas" and get into a fight, him actually being Phin's Hyde who had ran off with the body. Joel gets shot up by Hyde's goons before Hyde runs off and the goons are dispatched by mostly Elijah.

The lodge rendezvous at the Umberland Institute, fighting through swathes of Cabal before getting into the courtyard. They fight more Cabat and meet the remaining Rippers Leadership inside. They speak briefly and are given amulets and told the institute will explode soon as a trap was set for the Cabal.

The door is blasted down and Father A and his followers enter. What occurs is a snappy back and forth after Father A is disappointed by what happened to the lodge. Eventually Kinta goes to attack Father A right as we are teleporting.

We are teleported to a hideout, a large cavern with drilled tunnels and rudimentary accommodations. Joel is taken by Elijah to get the remaining bullets removed from his body. Joel after recovering briefly assists Ilia with experimenting with the Hyde Cure that he had been protecting for weeks. They succeed in making a cure.

They have a meeting with the remaining leadership. The group with Joel leading decide to go to Venice, Italy to find the Rosicrucians that Joel and Elijah used to be a part of before the faction was exiled.

General Trivia

  • Joel's left eye coloration is inspired by the Italian 'malocchio'
  • Joel was originally going to be a Mad Scientist in his first character draft specializing in Rippertech and flesh experiments.
  • His real name "Giovanni Moretti" was chosen after character creation when it was noticed that Joel Albrecht wasn't a very Italian sounding name. Actually helped with fleshing out Joel's character.
  • Joel has a fondness for peanut paste/peanut butter.

  • Character Summary

  • Joel is a good man who has spent his life running in one way or another. He's either running towards something or from something. At first it was adventure and excitement with Elijah but it quickly became running from... himself and humanity.

He became a Rippertech junkie, quickly rejecting more and more of his humanity. Not from some egotism or like "Need to be better for the sake of transcendence" but of fear. Fear of being hurt again. Fear of not being strong enough. Similarly he ran from himself in his perpetual hedonism. Drugs and Booze and Vice and Meaningless Sex.
  • These were all to distract from his own pain.

  • He's a doctor. Remarkably good at healing others. But the patient he always ran from was himself. He never tried to fix his own issues and I often wonder if it's a damnation complex that was there before selling half his soul. He's got Catholic Guilt out the ass, okay?

A broken man trying to be good. It's definitely in his nature to help but also he is definitely fucked up deeply.

Psychologically,  there's a damnation complex and as his Reason and humanity returned and the haze of drugs wore off, he developed a Sisyphus Mindset. He's fought so many monsters, fought the cabal, and they just keep hurting him and coming back. He rolls the boulder up the hill only for it to crush someone he's caring for as it rolls back down.

As he currently stands he's grown. He's healing from his trauma though as a master psychiatrist he understands trauma doesn't just leave you. You learn to live with your demons. He's fully grown into his role as the wiser old man, yet his body is 30.

Joel has lived in limbo for quite some time now. And he's finally growing out of it and back into himself. He was a shell of a man who's recently filled that hole and is discovering his past and reconciling his present with his future. He is trying to heal. Others, his legacy, his friends, and finally he's healing himself. And part of that is recognizing who he is.

    He's a damn good Ripper. He's a fighter, a monster hunter.
  • He's also a doctor.
  • A caretaker.
  • He's a deeply vulnerable individual burdened with quite a great deal of intellect both Psionic and otherwise. He is the tragic gothic Victorian man. Who is trying to be more than just some dark tragedy.
  • And even in the pits of his own damnation he is reaching desperately for the happy ending because whether he gets it or not, someone he cares for may get their happy ending.

A violent caretaker. A tired old man. A broken person trying to overcome their darkness and do good.

Relationships

elijah.png
Elijah Atkinson husband

Joel's husband and decades long friend. Met during their college years in England and hit it off after running into each other during their own separate investigations and discovering they both had a interest in the weird goings-on in the area. Grew very close, more than what would be considered normal, yet neither pushed the line. Especially Joel who longed for more with the Englishman. They worked together for a while til their respective roles had them separated days to months to a year at a time. During which they would send letters or try to organize leave to meet up in Bristol at Elijah's cabin. Eventually after years of this, meetings weren't coming together and letters would be returned back to Joel. This broke Joel's heart, assuming Elijah was dead.

They would meet again in 1895 after Joel heard word back from HQ on having sent his letter regarding Victor’s resurrection and being told to find someone called E in Waldensteig. He is overjoyed to see Elijah is alive and they reconnect. He is told that Elijah was asked to keep tabs on Frankenstein's Monster Adam and Igor. Eventually they get married at London HQ after confessing to each other.

Phineas Deckhart Friend

Phineas is a young Englishman that had a unwanted hitchhiker. Having been dosed 3 to 4 years prior by Dr. Jekyll and given a Hyde. Joel and Phineas have only known each other for roughly a year but due to their time working together and Joel acting as his main alienist, they have grown close outside of their Ripper work. Joel views Phineas a close confidant and almost like a beloved nephew. When Phineas was eventually cured of his Hyde the Italian viewed it as a major triumph in his career as an alienist. Nowadays, Joel and Phineas occasionally argue while maintaining professionalism over future plans on how to handle Henry Jekyll.

James/Mox Ex/Former Patient

A young man who's case was assigned to Joel. Treatments went well, Joel treating Mox as not a problem to be fixed rather instead a person born of trauma experienced by James. However with Joel also being mostly unstable, the close nature of their doctor/patient relationship changed into one of unhealthy attachment. They were lovers but Joel never declared them in a relationship due to his own fear of abandonment and commitment.

The two men broke up, relationship souring over a nasty fight, during with Mox wished to make their relationship official and Joel refused. Joel did not handle separating from Mox well, which caused Mox to obsess over the Italian and eventually trying to kill him. Mox is executed, Joel asking to do it as he feels guilt over his issues causing security risks like this.

Mox for a while comes back as a deeply ingrained hallucination in Joel's mind, taunting him for his failures and insecurities. Eventually he is dealt with via therapy.

Recently Joel has been contacting the spirits of both Mox and James. Mox still loves him and is obsessed, but is depressed, fine with waiting til Joel dies so "he can have him like they were meant to." James still loves him but is understanding in Joel moving on and doesn't blame him for what happened.
