May I stand unshaken

"I was way out there, treading water.  Could hear Mom screaming at me from the sand, but I wasn't looking at her.  No.  My eyes were straining to see those mountains across the bay.  Always wanted to go there.  Suppose drowning wasn't the right way to get there.  So I swam back to Mom."

Personality

Listener || Dutiful || Humble || Misguided || Shut Off

  • Andal takes a quiet approach to life.  They're not much of a talker and more likely to be talked to, but they don't mind.  Instead of touting their own tales of hunts and hard bounties, Andal listens to the stories of others.  They find a good campfire story relaxing.
  • They're loyal, almost to a fault.  Give Andal a job and they'll do it, even if that means dropping their morals.  In the end, completing the task is most important to Andal.  It's the only way they're getting paid anyway.
  • No matter how difficult or great a task, Andal will always play it down.  They'd rather get ill and die than be seen as some sort of hero.
  • While Andal practices kindness on their own time they won't shy away from taking on questionable jobs.  Andal isn't a leader.  They'll follow whoever takes the lead as long as they make sense.  They lean heavily on faith in others to make up for their lack of confidence.
  • Andal wears a happy mask.  Or... a tired mask, honestly.  Andal won't admit it, but they're not proud of some choices they've made.  Calling themself a coward when alone.  Reaching out is terribly hard for Andal up until they've reached a breaking point.

History

  • Andal was born in a small town just between Mirror Bay and the largest river and Mead.  It has a small, but healthy population.  Not many mages call the town home.  Families that live there typically have one mage member or none at all.  Andal's only other known Mage relative is their Uncle and you'd know it just looking at him, with darkened scales peeking out from his hide and a creeping feeling that when others look upon his face, perhaps they see nothing.  Andal looks... plain.  Just like their parents.
  • It would be the Uncle that discovered Andal's magical ability and quickly took on teaching them  Andal's parents weren't opposed to this.  While Andal's magic wasn't particularly troublesome as an unskilled youngster, it wouldn't hurt to have tutelage.   Andal spent more time on the trail with their Uncle than they ever spent with their parents after that.  The only rule was No Monster Hunts.
  • uncle disobeys immediate family and takes andal on a monster hunt after discovering their magic with a "smaller target"
  • Andal wasn't always mousy.  They were boisterous and rude.  Perhaps it was standing too close to their Uncle through all the hunting that shifted them inwards.  Their Uncle demonstrated how to apply magic to hunting big game and it was cruel to watch, but this was the new normal for Andal.  Uncle's magic was like Andal's.  It made things feel heavy, but with despair.  Also like Andal's magic it was mostly focused to a single target, however it had a sort of miasma effect or maybe that was just the normal feeling of fear.  For one demonstration, Uncle singled out a coyote that had been picking at scraps and drove it to snarling.  Andal would watch the coyote start to slink away before it lay down whimpering a couple yards away.  Andal's Uncle drew a pistol and fired once.
  • Surprising no one, Uncle took Andal to a Monster Hunt.  While Andal didn't provide any useful magical help they were a fantastic shot with a long range firearm.  Seeing other Mages in work fascinated Andal just as much as it crushed them.  So many fantastic abilities.  Fire leaping through the air, earth erupting around the Monster, the shifting form of their Uncle as he provided support by crippling the beast's will.  Andal thought they'd never hold up to that.
  • The aftermath of that Hunt would put Andal's relationship with their family on thin ice.  Their Uncle would remain extremely bitter for months following the Hunt as an effect of his magic and his form never quite returned to normal.  Uncle became reclusive and harsh, but Andal still followed him.  As "tainted" as Uncle had become, he still had Andal's well being in mind, demanding that Andal take their own path and make a name for themself.  Andal trusted their Uncle.  They always did.
  • Andal's close relationship with their Uncle had driven a stake between them and their more immediate family.  While still on speaking terms, they made it clear that they feared for Andal's future.
  • Andal kept up with hunting for skins to trade, using their magic to take down large targets like alligators and large predators.  After becoming a little strapped for cash, Andal started looking into bounties.  Uncle had mentioned them before.  Said you'd know a real bad person when you saw them.  Andal took it up, but struggles in convincing themself that all the targets are Bad People.

Gravity Net

Corruption00

Makes You Heavy

Manipulation of the gravity or pressure on a target individual.  Increasing downward forces to slow down or immobilize a target.  Harder and requires more focus to restrain stronger or larger targets.  Andal can push this pressure further in emotional highs to produce an inward crushing force on a target. (see air pressure can crusher)

Costs

  • Andal must reduce their movement for magic to be effective.  Can barely maintain faster than walking.
  • If a target outweighs Andal by 3x, Andal must be stationary to immobilize it.  Extreme forces needed to restrain large targets backfire on Andal causing them to feel at least half the same pressure.   When using their Crushing Force, Andal sustains bone fractures/breaks and hemorrhagic injuries (bleeding from ears, eyes, nose, mouth)
