An au set in venula's alien world of Ikosa! Somewhat of a retelling/translation of the original story through a different lens :)

Though her traits were originally selected for a higher position socially, Cook didnt come out quite right for what was expected of her pedigree. Along with her ruddy red coat (unlike her litter-mates who came out with much more unique coloration) she has several health issues in addition to just looking kind of "weird" by ikosan standards. Her having noticeable 'behavioral issues' made the decision to place her in labor easy for her higher ups. She doesnt deal well with others partially because of her inability to properly convey herself both physically(her ears are floppy and read submissively, something she resents about her anatomy) and verbally, on top of being prone to outburtsts when slights against her pile too high. Her job isolates her from others which prevents conflict, but degrades her social skills and mental stability even further.
She spends most of her time in the wilderness scaling cliffsides or inspecting rock structures looking for edible flora to be brought back to the city for processing into rations for the general populous. She finds her work genuinely interesting but the oppressive sense of being totally alone both out in the wilderness and back in the city tends to get to her. On the "bright" side when youre in the middle of the desert no ones around to hear you yell about how much people piss you off so she has that going for her.
