Oatey was born with a fondness for the sea, it called to him when he was just a wee bab to come and explore her vastness. It was something that his mother said that he had inherited from his father, who had died at sea before he was born. At least that's what he had been told throughout his childhood, which is why he grew up idolizing an imaginary version of his father, wanting to follow in his father's footsteps as a great sailor.

As soon as he was old enough and able to, Oatey joined the crew of the first ship that he could find that was accepting new crew members. That ship was called the Drunken Mariner, on which he started out as nothing more than just a mere cabin boy. The work was rough, especially since the captain and the cook were both very tough on him. So tough that after about a week, he was kicked off the boat at the next port they came to. Oatey didn't let this stop him though and soon boarded the first ship he found that was hiring new hands: The Sea Glider. On The Sea Glider, he again was hired on as the ship's cabin boy. While aboard this ship though, he became more knowledgeable about being a sailor and eventually graduated from cabin boy to one of the crew.

He eventually "left" The Sea Glider against his will when the ship had been boarded by the crew of the ship known as The Judge, which turned out to be a pirate ship. Oatey had no real desire to partake in piracy, but things took a turn when he discovered that the captain of The Judge was his own father. He spurned his father and left the ship, sneaking out one night and escaping on the lifeboat called The Bloodstained Hand and rowed to the nearest port. From there, he boarded the Queen Eileen and became a deckhand aboard that ship. It was aboard that ship that he fell in love with the captain's daughter, Anne, whom he later married. After settling down for a bit and having some children of his own, he eventually went back to sailing and became first mate of The Fearless, later to become captain when the other one stepped down to retire. When his wife died, he ended up turning to piracy, joining his father's crew and eventually replacing him as captain of The Judge (which he later renamed). As he grew older though, he passed that mantle on to someone else and went back to being an honest sailor before retiring altogether.

Now in his seventies, Oatey is enjoying the life of retirement. He still loves to listen to the sea's call, which is why he lives in a house by the beach. He's known to spin a good yarn and he'll gladly talk about his exciting past to anyone who might be interested. Oatey is also now caring for his grandson, Rónán, who is the son of Oatey's only daughter.
