Profile

Evus and his brother Ekurana were the result of an awkward union between two gnoll clans. A high-ranking palemaned barbarian female from a nomadic desert tribe had been howled at by a young, dark furred, and bestriped shaman in training across a large canyon. He hadn't known of her affiliation or stature at the time, simply practicing his love song on the first gnoll to catch his eye; but nevertheless she would seek him out to accept his primal 'offer' of (temporary) mateship. After a long night of debauchery, the mysterious barbarian disappeared. A year would pass before she stomped back to the cliffside village, thrusting two cubs into their bewildered father's arms. She explained that her clanmates almost killed the boys, so they had to be relocated quickly. Before he could put much thought into the idea of raising a family with this strange gnoll, she was gone again. He named them after a pair of mythological figures: Evus and Ekurana. Despite being fraternal twins raised in the same village, the brothers seemed to develop distinctly different personalities, hobbies, and skills. Although they were both taught of spirits and the hunt, Ekurana would excel at killing while Evus withdrew to converse with mysterious voices. Easily manipulated by compliments and bribes, Evus often acted as his brother's scapegoat when he got into trouble.

Ekurana, with his ravenous appetite, eventually ate the wrong goat. The clan's alpha discovered the warm corpse under Ekurana's bloody claws and confronted him furiously. Ekurana challenged him outright and the two sparred until the older gnoll managed to deliver a deadly blow, decapitating Ekurana before Evus could stop it. Suddenly filled with rage and eager to practice his magical skills, he summoned a pillar of flame from the ground and cooked the alpha alive. Knowing he would either be cursed by the ex-leader's family or chosen to lead in his absence, the fledgling shaman panicked and fled the village. Something compelled him to take his brother's severed head, which he eventually cleaned and kept in a rope pouch at his side. Evus knows that Ekurana's spirit was bound to the skull and regularly converses with his grumpy sibling - but the spontaneous possessions may not be completely consensual. Thus, the otherwise friendly nomad has 'unbalanced' days when he feels the need to cause havoc and taste fresh blood. Still, he is determined to spread gnollish wisdom and offer spiritual guidance while traveling the world (and beyond).

Before entering a massive forest, Evus eavesdropped on a pair of bandits who had spotted a lone unicorn less than a mile from the woodland path. He lured them into a trap, telling them that the unicorn was bathing in a nearby lake. Unbeknownst to them, the horse-like being they attempted to capture was a hungry kelpie who pulled the unfortunate bandits into a watery grave. Meanwhile, Evus found the shy pale unicorn and warned her that hunters were approaching, promising safety if she accompanied him. Using an enchanted shackle, he kept Kachina captive for various magical reagents. The shackle not only kept her close to him, but warded off other predatory creatures as well. While travelling through foreign territory, Makali - a small but fierce gnoll warrior - picked up their scent and followed them back to camp. They managed to sever the magic shackle with a special blade, but was caught before escaping with Kachina. Evus agreed to provide a bit of unicorn blood and hair in exchange for some of Makali's blacksmithing knowledge and sporadic protection. Kachina was allowed to roam free, yet preferred to stay near the gnolls.
