Summary

Quinn tries really hard to project the image of the perfect, put-together hero. As the hero Signal, he strives to be steady, confident, and to never waver. He puts a lot of pressure on himself. He's tries to have a plan of action at all times, but can think on his feet. He'll stand hard for what he believes in, which makes him a good hero.

Quinn tends to keep to himself, prefering to stay in his shell. He can get frustrated easily, but he tries to keep a cool head. He learns to open up a lot more around his friends.

In the mask

Signal can come off as almost standoffish. Quinn has a set idea of what he thinks a hero should be, so he holds himself to that standard. He's definitely called someone "citizen" at least a couple times. He's not as good at the tealking-to-people part of heroing, but he tries his best.

Out of the mask

Quinn is more reserved than his friends. He considers himself a pessimist, but he stubbornly believes that the world can be made better. He tends to be snarky and has a deadpan sense of humour.

History

Quinn Hikari Haruki was born to Hiroshi Haruki and Donna Marshall. When he was in 3rd grade, he began experiencing hearing loss because of a genetic condition. He got hearing aids, and his family began learning ASL together. He came out as trans and began transitioning in middle school, and began manifesting his powers once he began high school. He'd never been super social, and tended to bounce off of people. He had a short fuse and was prone to annoyance/anger. He was always very analytical, and liked to know how things worked, whether that be a bike, a clock, or a classroom. He refused to do things without knowing why he should do them, but stubbornly stuck to his principles once he had them.

OriginStory

Crescent City was never quite large enough for there to be large-scale villainy, but as he grew older, he began to recognize wrongdoing in his life and decided he had to help. After the Bicycle Incident, he decided that he had to be a hero. He honed his powers, grabbed some clothes from the athletic store, and strapped on his rollerskates, ready to fight whatever came at him. His dedication to heroing makes him a natural leader, and he always gives his all to help people.

Powers

Quinn can create hard light constructs, essentially shaping light into crystalline structures with willpower.

His interest in the inner workings of different technology led to him trying to replicate those things with his hard-light construct powers. His first big project was a wind-up clock, based on a pocketwatch his grandfather had given him when he was a kid. As he experimented with creating these finer mechanisms, he discovered that creating things was much easier with a focus— something to tie the idea to the act of creation. He found that the physicality of ASL combined with the meaning of each sign was the perfect avenue. He soon got into the rhythm of using ASL to act as a conduit for his powers, something he still does today.

Strengths
  • Flexible - Quinn's powers are very versatile, and they can be used to fit almost any situation with some creative thinking.
  • Methodical - Quinn is a little more practiced than the other Moonlighters, and is more precise with his powers.

Weaknesses
  • Fatigue - Creating structures that are large/have many parts will drain his energy quickly.
  • Persistence - Signal never wants to back down, which causes him to push himself too far.
Style

Quinn dresses for comfort and practicality first. He likes clothes with soft fabrics and lots of pockets. His taste in clothing is something between wannabe punk/grunge guy and that kid who wears, like, three different hoodies. He's a recovering emo kid who never really left his emo phase.

Blink started heroing soon after Signal did, and soon they decided to work together. They were cautious around each other at first, but they worked together well. They complement each other's weaknesses: Blink is cautious where Signal is headstrong, and Blink is people-friendly where Signal is more awkward.
Eventually, Bella and Quinn reveal their identities to each other. They've had experiences together that they share with no one else: upkeeping a secret identity, heroing in an environment where no one else believes in you. They're close, and are very in sync when working together. They both have a passion for puzzle games and horror movies.

Quinn did not trust Kira at all when they first met. Kira burst onto the scene as the first Citadel-Sponsored Superhero, and Quinn wanted nothing to do with her. Kira took this in stride, though, and mostly poked fun at him.
It took a long time and many months of working together to earn each other's trust, but Kira is the person who he's probably closest with. They have a lot in common re: humor and they kinda Get each other. Chaotic bisexual pals. Kira is really good at being a little shit to bring him out of a mood while still being conscious of his feelings. They like racing each other.

Okay, listen. Lou is-- he's sweet. He's very sweet. And nice to Quinn. And. Cute. But that doesn't really matter, because above almost everything, Lou is infatuated with superheroes, and especially with Signal. Any kind of genuine affection he gets from Lou is smothered by the overwhelming belief that he only likes the mask, and if he knew it was me, he could only be disappointed. As someone who is very encased in his shell, Quinn admires Lou's effortless exuberance and unfailing kindness. He's caught between wanting to impress him and not wanting to heighten his expectations.
Eventually, the truth comes out and Bella and Quinn reveal their identities to Lou. After the inital shock has settled down, they have a good ol' Feelings Talk on the bench in the park where they'd meet and confess to each other. They're very sweet as a couple: both are big on physical affection so they're kind of attached at the hip a lot of the time. Lou makes Quinn want to see the world as a little brighter.
