Volpe is the son of a Sandwing inventor, born in the Scorpion Den where his father had a booth and sold his creations. They ranged from simple clocks to mechanical creatures. Volpe's mother was 1/3 Skywing and the source of his reddish coloration. She wasn't really around for much of his life and he didn't really care either. He had a strange infatuation with his father's creations from a young age and often helped him on them. He gave Volpe a little fox machine that moved like a living creature, and that was when he realized that his father was an animus, descended from Jerboa I. But his father soon became irritable and cold. His soothing company became harsh, and so Volpe ran away. He ended up in the Rainforest Kingdom where he met some Rainwings who welcomed him into their tribe.
