Zen is a fallen angel that takes on the primary appearance of a human. They are a former assassin turned "detective" as a means of investigating abnormalities and monsters.
Zen is a 5'8" individual with dusty, darkened skin. While lacking any definitive traits that determine a particular sex, they are mistaken to be masculine. They bear a 5-o'clock shadow on their chin. They have ragged, shoulder-length hair that is a near-white lavender. It may occasionally reflect more colors through tricks of the light. Zen's eyes are typically described as sunset in color - a darkened orange with hints of red, but too saturated to be classified as brown. The outfit they are seen most commonly in is a beige trenchcoat, blotted with cigarette burns and old stains that are too stubborn for washes to remove. Underneath it is a long-sleeved black turtleneck shirt, simple but soft in design. They wear long khaki pants that are a considerable shade darker than the trenchcoat, but compliment it alongside black boots. The unkempt appearance is fitting given they are rarely seen without a cigarette nearby.
At the tip of the iceberg, it seems Zen is your cliche edgy and brooding individual with a dark past. This is true, however the complexity to them as an individual is far more than what could be put into words. Someone who has been broken and beaten down to the point of taking punches and continuing to walk, fighting back with equal ferocity. Someone who wants to be alone, but not feel lonely. Zen isn't easy to talk to, often wanting to avoid social encounters altogether, but keeps emotionally distant as much as possible. They do not sugarcoat any words, often being seen as rude and unaware of social cues (which is true).
Created by higher angels and deities with the purpose of becoming a Guardian to specific people of humanity, Zen, at the time referred to as Žadvainas, was nothing more than a physical embodiment of the duty at hand. Their first assignment was to an individual known as Devonte, an elderly human who lived in a secluded town in East Africa. Due to an error in the ways of angel recreation and atom reassignment, Devonte was able to directly see, touch, and speak with Žadvainas. As a result of communicating and learning more about humanity, Žadvainas began to develop an individuality, straying from their direct role and purpose as a Guardian. To err is to be human, and they were slowly taking on more flaws as a side effect. These flaws would build until they met at a point, that of which was being unsuccessful in saving or protecting Devonte when his life was threatened. The price to their individuality was his death, to which the angels above sent for Žadvainas, recalling them with the intent to perform a purifying execution. In the middle of this process, just after their wings were stripped from them, Žadvainas, who was overcome with emotions and physical suffering, managed to escape, plummeting back down to the earth below in a ball of fire. Their body, now frozen in a particular state of atom reconstruction, took on a primarily humanoid appearance, and no longer was immortal. They crashlanded into the abode of one Jahi Takahashi, who would go on to nurture and care for them, giving them the new name Zen.
Zen had to learn everything. Physically, they started life as a human around the equivalent of nineteen years of age. Angels are naturally inquisitive, and fast learners at that, to which they were no exception. Due to the circumstances aforementioned, and their original body having no such traits to begin with, Zen was deaf and had to rely on the likes of hearing aids and sign language to properly communicate before they perfected speech. Struck by immense guilt and grief, it took two years to fully trust Jahi, and about a decade to consider him as family, nowadays viewing him as a paternal figure.
Angels are naturally inquisitive individuals who can learn significantly faster than most species. As such, Zen can quickly grasp onto new concepts with relative ease. Despite losing most of their angelic traits, Zen can also teleport, though due to losing their wings, light pours from old wounds in their back and causes them (manageable) pain. They also have some healing capabilities, though only for smaller injuries. Angels also can technically lie, but not without minor drawbacks - drawbacks that a trained eye can easily spot.
