Hy Lin (Lin (Boisbeni))

At first glance, Lin is a mysterious and imposing figure. Cold, calculated, and stalwart - Lin had made something of a name for themself during the worst of King Mal's reign, being one of the boisbeni who, alongside their hero, actually acted to help draw in and capture others of their own kind. This uncaring mask is something that Lin is capable of slipping back into, wears naturally, and with a sword at their side, a little water, or even just themself - they can become quite the fearsome opponent indeed. However, the story of the star-like Boisbeni who was a traitor to their own kind is not the full story, and in truth, easily put - Lin has something of a 'PR' problem. Or, even more easily and accurately put - Lin is a bit of a PR problem.

'Alien' might be a kind way of putting Lin's demeanor - they seem to really struggle with the aspects of themeself that are very Boisbeni. Raised for quite a while as a dragon by their family of space-faring dragons, Lin is really only half Boisbeni at best - and they have dysphoric feelings about how they are not really a dragon. For such a long time in their life they felt - no, expected to be able to achieve a draconic form, and it's been... quite a long time. In the past, this led them to try anything they could to set themself apart from others of their species, try to cling to whatever kept them different and separate from the Boisbeni - and this self-hate turned prejudice was only fed by the situations they found themself in. While Lin no longer truly holds all the nasty opinions of their own species they used to cling to, they have a hard time unlearning them - and sometimes they don't even realize what they just said is a prejudice or assumption, and sometimes they don't understand why or how they've hurt someone else.

Nowadays the topic of other Boisbeni is a thorny one for Lin. There's a regret for what they've done, an awkwardness, no idea how to connnect - a wish to be able to connect - a wish to be able to push it all away. It's easier to be cold at times, so sometimes they're cold. Other times, they might open up just in time to get hurt. They're quite good at that - getting hurt - but also, they can't say they don't deserve that.

You perhaps wouldn't think it from their history, but Lin has a strong sense of justice and right or wrong, and often tries to do the 'most correct' thing they see before them. This can make them extremely stubborn, as... often, their sense of justice leads them to self justify rather than actually being open to hearing what someone else might think is right at any one point in time, but it isn't out of malice. Lin can be surprisngly kind and caring. They care deeply, and show it through a quiet but deep running thoughtfulness. At their best, Lin is a stalwart and kind individual that loves the ocean and loves to share the things they love. That part of them has been buried though - it's a part that they often deny, they can't see. They care very deeply for those they consider people, and ultimately want to protect others from 'problems'... but they can be easily misled on who or what the problem actually is. They aren't stupid, but they are kind of a dumbass at times - especially when it comes to themself. Lin likes to connect, can't help but connect very easily to people, including people that might be bad for them. They don't have a lot of care for themself or whether or not they get hurt, especially not in the time since the Boisbeni have been freed. They have a shockingly low opinion of themself that seems to extend into everything they do - they're most comfortable being a weapon for something else's sake, but they don't have faith they could safely choose that sake anymore. Ultimately, they're not sure where to go or what to do with themself.

When Lin thinks of 'justice', they think of things that people deserve. That part of them is a honed blade - and with the way their sight works, they could find justification in anyone to hurt them. That's something that scares them nowadays. They've been freed, but a part of them is still back, replaying every mistake that led to them being captured. They would give anything to go back to being ignorant - but they couldn't live with themself if they went back to the way they were. They miss their hero - Argyros - but they're also deeply hurt by her. They'd love to apologize to someone - but they know they don't deserve to be forgiven. So - instead, they isolate, they do what little good they can in the situations they see in front of them, and they move on before the guilt of tiny indulgences gets to them.

Coming soon. i'll write this out more in depth, but lin grew up with their space dragon family, only learned what they were later in life, ended up leaving. ran into their first hero, Argyros, who was someone who had some bad experiences with boisbeni, and ended up talking to lin. they had a genuine and close connection, Argyros making lin feel like the aspect of themself that wants to bond to another was ok, but Argyros really liked lin because they weren't 'really' a boisbeni, they were 'one of the good ones'. at a point argyros goes in to work with mal rather than fighting him and lin is pulled in too. lin helps bring in more boisbeni, convinced they're doing it for the beni's sake as well as the sake of everyone around - because they're potentially dangerous monsters, of course - and becomes increasingly more uncomfortable at the glimpses of mistreatement they see. eventually, the wool is pulled from their eyes and their bond breaks, and they are no longer 'one of the good ones'. they are put in the same sort of confinement that the others are in, knowing that so many people suffered because of them. whoopsies.
