Name Wolfgang 'Wolfie' Pierce (Nil)
Race Doppelganger
Age 26 (56)
Gender Genderfluid
Height 5'8"
Occupation Driver

opportunistic ✦ flaky ✦ independent ✦ adaptable

Wolfie's mind moves quickly, though exciteable isn't quite the word for it. They enjoy solving puzzles but can bite off more than they can chew, needing to sheepishly step back and away from a problem they jumped too eagerly into. They're pretty go-with-the-flow, to the point where sometimes they lose sight of their original goals. Though they like helping others and being part of a team, they try their best to be independent so that they aren't left hanging when the ball gets dropped.

Wolfie is difficult to offend and shakes slights off easily. This doesn't mean they forget, though. They watch how people treat others, and they watch closely-- this is part of how they used to justify hunting and killing humans. The shittier the person was to others around them, the less guilt they felt in replacing them.

Wolfie puts a huge import on mementos-- gifts from friends will be cherished forever, as items are grounded and unchangeable. Breaking or losing these things can ruin their whole day- which is unfortunate when they don't have a lot of space to store said objects.

I, the undersigned, hereby agree to follow the charter of walpurgis and all rules therein:

Area of Expertise

Wolfie's magic comes from their nature as a doppelganger. They have an inherent ability to read others and their potential, and also to assume the shape of that potential.

Abilities

Face Stealing: Shapeshifting for doppelgangers isn't as free as it would be for other shifters or changelings. Wolfie must be within range (100 meters) of their target while they have its form- the closer they are to them, the stronger the stealing. They can even duplicate abilities or powers if they stalk someone for long enough (over a month of only copying the same person). The moment they switch to someone else, this resets and they must begin bonding all over again. If Wolfie has someone's shape while they die, they get to keep it- but this requires them to be actively in that form at the time of death, and they lose the last face they'd stolen (they can only have one permanent face at a time).

Soul Searching: Wolfie has the inherent ability to feel the strength of the SPIRIT stat of others. This is how doppelgangers go about choosing targets to steal from (though they call it borrowing, as the person they duplicate doesn't lose their ability). After bonding a person more closely (again, just over a month of copying only the same person) they can read the type of magic they can do and how they might go about doing it. Because of this ability, Wolfie has a general 'jack of all trades' knowledge of magics and how they work- they are no specialist, but can pick up the basics quickly when other people talk about them.

Lifetimes: Doppelgangers can extend their life by stealing the identity of someone younger than themselves. Wolfie has already done this a few times.

Polaris: This is a magic they stole and honed from the true Wolfie. Wolfie keeps the position of the celestial north pole in mind at all times, and always knows their position in relation to that true north.

Limitations

Know You By Your Name: Names have power. There's a chance that calling Wolfie by their names can force them out of a shapeshifted state, back into their current face (HEART roll vs Wolfie's SPIRIT roll). Ranging from the MOST effective to LEAST effective:

  • The person they're currently stealing from calls them Nil +4
  • The person they're currently stealing from calls them Wolfie +3
  • Another person calls them Nil +2
  • Another person calls them Wolfie +1

It Takes Time: It can take time for Wolfie to get to know a person, as some are more furtive than others. They can have difficulty reading people's magic if they are aloof or private by nature, though spending a longer amount of time around them will help them with reading them more accurately.

Poor Imitation: Wolfie only steals a person's magical talent- this gives them abilities to borrow latent power, but does not do anything for their finesse, knowledge, or resolve. Additionally, this effect is halved unless they permenantly steal someone else's face (aka they die while they have their face).

If I'm You, Who's Me?: Wolfie does take on the personality traits and preferences of their current permanent face, regardless of what their last identity was. This includes maturity and emotional growth as well. Younger doppelgangers tend to prefer younger faces, and older ones older faces, for this reason.

Wolfie's Potential: The true Wolfie was a weakblooded witch with very little magical potential-- they have already maxed the growth of their current face as far as it will go.

Spells

Seeming: A potent spell used to aid or trick the eyes. This spell allows you to change the appearance of up to 5 creatures of your choosing that you can see. You give each target a new, illusory appearance that lasts for 8 hrs. The illusion must still have the same basic arrangement of limbs as the creature's actual form, and it does not hold up to physical inspection.

History

Wolfie, or rather Nil, moved to Walpurgis after their family was destroyed by one of the people they were trying to hunt. They've decided to prioritize safety over longevity, and now make a living by offering rides to people, moving furniture, and delivering produce.

Early Life

Nil's family- two adult doppelgangers named Nim and Near, and Nil's sibling Nemo, hunted across the states, working together to steal the lives of entire families. Whenever one of them was growing too old, or when they seemed close to danger or being found out, they would move again and choose new targets, killing them to steal them in their prime. Nil experienced two lives this way, first as a young boy named Peri, then as a young girl named Dahlia. Tiring of having to work to get anywhere in life, they decided to try to move up in the world, setting their sights on an old witch family, the Antares.

There was a runaway witch of the Antares family not related to the main household who had eloped with a human and was living both peacefully outside of the family's protection and influence. This was their target to begin moving closer to the main household, to eventually move their way closer and inside.

Near and Nim secured the parents with little trouble, creating opportunity for Nil and Nemo to take the children. However, the older brother- a normal, non-magical human- grew wise to their existence, killed Nemo, destroyed Nil's parents, and finally, believing that Nil had already replaced him, killed his own little brother Wolfie. Nil assumed the face of 10 year old Wolfie, while Wolfie's older brother fled the slaughter of his own family.

Moving to Walpurgis

Alone and afraid after the destruction of the rest of their family, Nil- now Wolfie- went into hiding. Traveling to the east coast with the face of a child was difficult, but not impossible, though it did take them the better part of a year to finally make it to Walpurgis. It was a place their family had known about before, if only to know how to avoid it. They made the decision to end their career of hunting and deciding it was better to live safe than to live long.

They entered Walpurgis signing their true name, Nil, but still pretending to be just a child. It wasn't difficult to pretend-- when doppelgangers steal people, they also steal their personalities and mindsets. They refused a foster home, choosing instead to sleep in a barn in exchange for doing chores-- but did concede to attending school and taking handouts. At '18' again, Wolfie had saved up enough to leave town, secure a driver's license for their new name and face, and spent some few years commercial trucking to get their normal wanderlust out and save up money. As time passed, they found themselves growing more and more nervous outside of the protection they had become accustomed to in Walpurgis... and admittedly growing homesick, they returned in just March of 2021.

Present Day

During their time outside of Walpurgis, Wolfie had saved up enough to purchase, modify, and convert an old van. Aluminum, fiberglass, and other composite materials form a majority of the vehicle for town safety standards, and it's probably true to say Wolfie has invested as much into it as a person normally puts into a house.

The most niche service they offer is to tow furniture for moving, though this sort of service needs to be scheduled for use of the trailer. During the early mornings, Wolfie regularly delivers produce and goods between markets and providers in town- vegetables, meat, milk, etc are brought to stores from the Arcadian fields. During the day, they can be found in the town, ready to offer rides to folks who need it.

Race Lore

Doppelgangers are generally hunters who stalk their prey, assuming their face, their name, and eventually their lives. They can duplicate the faces and copy the magic of others, but are limited in their proximity and time spent around their target. The more a target sees a doppelganger, and the more disassociated they feel from their own identity as a result, the stronger a doppelganger's hold over their life.

Some are non-malevolent, and simply wait for their quarry to die of natural causes or accidents. Some even live alongside their targets, with a mutual agreement of pretending to be twins. Others are more ambitious, and take matters into their own hands, killing to get young or strong lives.

Some doppelgangers are born from others naturally, bearing appearances and powers similar to whatever faces the parent(s) were wearing at the time. Others simply appear, becoming aware of their sentience while already wearing the mask of another person and following them.

Business [ -- ]

It's not a super formal business-- the most 'professional' arrangements Wolfie has is delivery, and even that they don't do a lot of seeing as many townsfolk are willing to go out to Casterly Ct themselves for fresh food. They bring supplies to restaurants, drive people around... they're just a glorified errand boy, really.

Items

Pet Stone [Uncommon]

A normal looking stone. When touched it is bound. It will blink into pockets and bags, when not used it will start annoyingly blinking into shoes, sleeping bags or in front of your feet. It likes to swim and hates campfires.
