Eunsoo Turner

Eunsoo Nicoline Turner, better known as his stage name Nicoline, is a Korean-Canadian singer from White Lake. He is the leader, vocalist and guitarist in the indie rock band Saccharine, consisting of two other members, bassist Miller Proulx, drummer Foster "Vex" Schmidt, with guitarist Doug Olson as a former member. Starting Saccharine as a passion project, the band quickly reached fame in part due to Eunsoo's breakthrough efforts—but what flies must eventually come down, and Saccharine threatens to snap from its strings as Eunsoo sets out to destroy everything he has created.

About

Eunsoo's childhood seemed to be something his social workers desperately wanted him to forget. It worked, to some extent—supposedly the strenuous amounts of therapy he attended as a child had blanked out the first ten years of his life. It's therefore no surprise that Eunsoo talks of it rather matter-of-factly, since it all seems so passive to him: his parents didn't get along, with themselves, and with him (he supposed that was the simpler version). It's his first memory that's the troubling part: he remembered staring and staring at his childhood home, its walls licked over with the same flame that had burned the skin off a good part of his right arm. It marked the beginning of hopping through foster homes, not quite feeling that he belonged anywhere. Naturally, as soon as he possibly could, he dove head-first into the only escape he could call home: music.

Well—why not? It seemed fitting for Eunsoo, who seemed to only thrive in his own world. Deemed too "girly" for traditionally masculine walks of life, accompanied with generally poor performance in school, starting a band wasn't that revolutionary of a decision. Funded by weekend shifts and with the help of his band members, recruited at an impromptu meeting at the back of the school grounds, Saccharine was born—rising to fame for its critical acclamation for its unique, synthy style and noncomformist demeanor. For once, Eunsoo felt like he belonged, finally in possession of something that was truly his, and not a product of the ire of his childhood.

But Eunsoo had rose too quickly; he'd forgotten to deal with a past that was quickly catching up on him, and it was about to destroy everything he had so passionately built.

Personality

Eunsoo's quite eccentric—it's not clear whether he was always like this or it was a product of his past, but he seems to only want to do things his way, even if it's clear that it's not logical or will not fruit in anything productive. It's easier to say that he lives in his own world, abiding only by his own rules. He'd become less defiant at the turn of his 20s, but Eunsoo's still unaware of concepts like personal space or privacy, despite being fully capable of reading the room. He holds conversations at his own pace; he seems to have no problem intruding himself in one or leaving one immediately without warning. This makes him generally hard to handle and—to most—annoying and dislikeable, even to many of his friends. One way to combat this is to "schedule" and time conversations with him, which may seem robotic, but Eunsoo knows when to be serious.

Strangely, despite his carefree attitude, he has a deep and empathetic understanding of others, and knows more about the people around him than he lets on. Despite unwillingness to become others' therapists, he's peculiarly good at giving advice, though only dishes them out when the situation is dire. He wasn't always this way; though he supposed that one day, he stopped trying to shoulder the "burdens of others"; unless he really needed to.

His bipolar diagnosis contributes heavily in his discography and music style. Many releases go side-by-side with his phases of mania. This comes with increasing intensity of his already erratic behaviour, e.g. going days without sleep to work on his music, the need to continuously practice, increased irritability with other band members, etc. While the band's manager offsets many of his hasty ventures, some make it through—sometimes to fantastic results, sometimes to destructive chaos. Still, there seems to be more to his genius than just strokes of luck; Eunsoo eerily comes too close to the tortured artist description, if anything.

Appearance

Despite his lean appearance, he lacks a lot of muscle, and is hence mostly described as "skinny-fat". Eunsoo usually bears ashy-red hair with black stripes that are tucked inside his glasses; this may be complemented with dyes or extensions when he performs. Notable features are his burn scar, appearing as a graft that spans along his upper arm and some extent of his shoulder, as well as numerous piercings on his face (and, curiously, only his left ear exclusively). Eunsoo has peculiarly pronounced areas below his lash line that makes his eyes appear large. His underbite places his lower jaw more forward than his upper jaw, which creates the illusion that he seems to constantly pout.

Eunsoo's outfits are usually for comfort. He exclusively only dresses with effort only to perform or shoot videos. He usually wears full-framed glasses. Additionally, Eunsoo hasn't ever cared to conform to gender, opting for an androgynous look. He has a specific distaste for appearing "too gendered". His wardrobe can be described as "skateboard wear".

Trivia

  • Eunsoo has Tourette's. A majority of his tics are body movements like blinking, jerking his head suddenly, or scrunching his face up (or a combination of them). They mostly go unnoticed, attributed to his "eccentricism". They increase in frequency when he's stressed, but does not happen at all when he's practicing or performing.
  • He has a very feminine voice. Accompanied with his appearance, he often gets mistaken for a woman. Eunsoo doesn't seem to care much about this occasion.
  • Seems to remember a broken Korean despite a largely blotty childhood. The only time he ever speaks it is if it's in jest, or singing.

Meta/Design

  • Please do not draw him like a "f*mboy"/extremely effeminate to achieve an effect that's adjacent. It's a-okay to depict him just feminine.
  • Don't forget his piercings and his burn scar!
