Miller Proulx

Miller Proulx, or simply known as Miller, is a bassist from White Lake, in the indie rockband Saccharine. The group consists of other two members: singer and guitarist Eunsoo Turner, and drummer Foster "Vex" Schmidt", with guitarist Doug Olson as a former member. As a member of his school's jazz band, he was recruited by classmate Eunsoo to become the band's bassist. His kind predisposition has single-handedly carried the band at its lowest point—but Miller's eagerness to shoulder the world's burden is exactly what makes it all fall apart.

About

Miller's passion for music makes up for his usually quiet nature. Known to be quite a good student all-around, Miller has carried White Lake's school-run jazz band since his enrollment. If you're in the band, you'd probably hear his rare, quiet lament that a school's band has been the only place he truly felt he belonged in—his family's frequent move around the country has left him out of touch with many friends; hence, he's stopped looking forward for permanence, instead focusing in the only thing that was always there: playing bass.

Still, it's not all happy in Miller's own world. His own father—White Lake's own home-brewed bassist Jones Proulx—had crippled him with a pretty severe case of impostor's syndrome. This, and the fact that his father's playboy tendencies has driven his mother to move around the country, had made Miller's social skills with anyone pretty stagnant. His withdrawn yet people-pleasing tendencies stem from not wanting to be the man his father was, despite admiring him almost to death. It's not difficult to see why his meeting with Eunsoo Turner—his later bandmate—in this brand-new school, seemed too good to be true.

The formation of Saccharine after an impromptu meeting at the back of the school's ground had launched into something of a dream. Miller's quite happy with his fellow bandmates, finally feeling the sense of belonging—perhaps a little too belonging as he starts looking at Eunsoo in a different light. His desperation to please others may be the partial reason why he's still chasing after Eunsoo long after they've broken up—all while trying to keep the band together at its breaking point—and it's really about time for Miller to realise, he just can't fix everything that's broken.

Personality

Miller's quite quiet, though he's not one to shy away from a crowd. In fact, he quite likes the company; it's a misconception that he's avoidant of people. His calm demeanour is often mistaken to be one of aloofness; really, that can't be farther than the truth. Once Miller has warmed up to you, he proves to be quite a useful acquaintance. He knows a lot of people, and many people know him—though he's not exactly fond of the popularity. He doesn't really care about the fame Saccharine has brought about. Miller's here for his connection with his bandmates and his music—but he's afraid that others don't share the same mindset as he does. He's therefore not always truthful of what he truly thinks, only letting on if the other shares the same feelings. He seems to have a lot of patience... but he can be really angry when he wants to be.

When his guard is truly down, Miller's fun to be around with. He has a knack of cracking jokes at the best timing. His passion for music truly shines when he's performing alone; it's not that he's atrocious at performing anywhere else, but he hasn't gotten grips with his stage fright quite yet.

Appearance

Miller is described to be well-built, handsome to a fault. He sports ashy blonde hair at neck length, the back of it often gelled up. He has hazel eyes and somewhat rosy skin. He knows how to dress well, even at relaxed settings; he usually prefers two layers, and is generally opposed to wearing anything too oversized. Generally he looks quite polite, afraid to inconvenience if anything. It's easy to tell he came from a well-off family; he looks quite well-groomed. Most of his clothes are monochrome or simple, with a certain colour accent.

Relationships

Eunsoo Turner
Was their relationship real? Was it ever real to Eunsoo? The answer's no—but Miller's still hung up on it, desperate for it to be more than just "best friends". Maybe it was Miller's fault, after all; Eunsoo was the only person that had stayed true to him for all these years, and Miller may have mistaken their shared passion for love. Eunsoo has Miller's utmost respect and attention—it's not a secret that Miller fawns over Eunsoo more than the other bandmates—and despite Eunsoo having proved and said time and time again it was better off for them to be friends, some part of Miller hopes that things change.

Foster Schmidt
Miller tries his best to accommodate to Foster, knowing that besides Eunsoo and Doug, the two of them are nothing but side characters—especially Foster, whose only real connection to the band was to Doug. It's not that Miller hates Foster; but Miller's tendency to side with Eunsoo whenever they have a row strains Miller and Foster's relationship. Otherwise, Miller greatly respects him as the band's percussionist. They would've been great friends, if they met at another circumstance.

Doug Olson
Miller secretly hates Doug—there's really nothing wrong about Doug himself; yet Miller's not ready to admit that he was jealous of Doug. Sure, Eunsoo and Doug grew up together in the same foster home and the hardships had strengthened their bond—and it felt mean to say, but was there ever an end to Eunsoo's grieving? God, Doug died and it was sad, but wasn't that it? It's unfortunate timing Doug passed just as Eunsoo and Miller got together, and Eunsoo couldn't direct his attention to the relationship. Miller had accepted that—and recognises he was being a dick—but it's not like anyone knows how he really feels. Plus, he's allowed to feel this way... right?

Trivia

  • Miller's terrified of bugs. That's probably about the only time he'd lose his composure.
  • He has "very nice eyebrows". That, and his neatness, is usually what people notice about him.

Meta/Design

  • Miller is quite well-built. Not too broad, but pretty lean.
