The Depths

Some of the deeper parts of the ocean contain their own colonies of merfolk. This results in them appear more exotic appearances, with differing designs and colors not usually pictured for the average merperson. That said, it does not make them any less sentient in that regard and they go on to provide their own importance to merfolk as a whole.
