Jellybean Dragons, more popularly known as "beans," are a furry, wingless, land-dwelling dragon subspecie which are named after the jellybean-shaped egg that they hatch from. Even though they come in many colors, shapes and sizes, beans can be easily recognized by their signature traits: a furry upper lip, a tufted tail and a pouch.

Jellybean Dragons, like their name implies, are a sort of dragon- though unlike the dragons you may be thinking of, they are mammalian in nature, with warm blood. They're fuzzy and soft, with thick tufted tails and a fluffy upper lip. Their feet are lizard-like, and tipped with short claws that help them find purchase on slippery surfaces despite their furry feet and lack of pawpads. One of their most notable traits is the large pouch that every Jellybean Dragon has- although it's mainly intended to hold their eggs or young children, many beans just use it to store snacks or cool rocks. It's also not unusual to see some older children still trying to hide in their parent's pouch, despite being a touch too big to completely fit.

Like their namesake, Jellybean Dragons can breathe fire. Unlike true dragons, however, this fire is gentle and incapable of harming others, only providing a comfortable warmth. Perhaps because of this, beans have grown to have a reputation for being gentle and mild, as well- though truthfully, individuals are just as prone to being nasty or mean as any other species. At the very least, their bark is generally worse than their bite. Their teeth aren't terribly sharp- Jellybean Dragons have adapted to an omnivorous diet, consisting mainly of vegetable matter, fruit, and the occasional fish. Unfortunately, they do not tolerate other types of meat very well, and can become quite sick from eating it.

Although the queen of the Jellybean Dragon Kingdom has been blessed with the power of magic, other beans aren't so lucky. JBDs are incapable of casting magical spells, or even having complete control over magical artifacts. Jellybean Dragons and magic seem, on the whole, incompatible- although some magical items may affect JBDs or afflict them with minor curses, actual attempts to control magical artifacts tend to quite literally blow up in their faces.

Jellybean Dragons are highly adaptable creatures, and they can live in the wild or among humans.

Those who live in the wild usually live in groups called "Jams", consisting from two to four families, though of course, the numbers may vary. Jams can also contain non-related JBDs. Usually, there is no problem in accepting new members in the Jam; the more the merrier! Jam members work together and support each other. Some JBDs may live alone (never completely isolated from other JBDs, though) or with a partner. "Jam" has also become a popular term for a group of domestic beans living under the same roof.

Jellybean Dragons are intelligent creatures as well as quick learners. Each individual has its own preferences, making it unique and different from the rest. Besides knowing their own language, Jellybean Dragons are capable of learning other languages and communicating with other animals in their environment, including humans.
