Tooth Emergency

Posted 5 months, 16 days ago by Deadnettle

I’ll keep this as brief as I can.

I’ve been off of health insurance since July 2023, and I’ve been avoiding anything medical and dental while I dealt with applying for Medicaid—and that didn’t go as intended OR hoped. I got denied any health coverage, but I do get food stamps… only $23 a month, though.

Then somewhere in October, one of my back teeth started breaking apart in my mouth. At the same time, CareCredit lowered my credit all the way down to $500 (which I owed on it at the time) due to low credit, so I’m not able to use that for any tooth care. My dentist at that time also didn’t take my insurance anymore, either.

I finally found a dentist that does take the insurance, but there’s a lot of dental work that needs to be done ASAP. Two teeth need to get extracted, and two more teeth need root canals. I’m seeing a root canal specialist on Monday to see how much the two root canals will cost, on top of the $215 cost I already got for the extractions. A friend loaned me $200 to cover most of the extractions, but a new issue came up.

My dentist left the country to adopt a child from India, and he’s having issues with returning to the country. The dentist office doesn’t think he’ll be back in time for the extraction appointment on the 22nd like I had. The oral surgeon they wanted to send me to instead is booked all the way through February, but they’re looking out for openings from there, or on the off-chance the doctor can return home by then.

Unfortunately for me, the infection has gotten worse, and I’m on antibiotics for the next two weeks. Tonight, I found a same-day dental emergency center that can do the extraction and takes my insurance, but they have a co-pay of $155 and they insisted on giving me an exam separate from what my dentist did, and therefore I don’t know if the $215 estimate would apply to them, too. So they are a last resort for me, and I’m waiting until I’m done with my antibiotics to either hear some good news from my dentist or to schedule an appointment with them.

Long-winded explanation done (someone please teach me how to do spoilers on here), I have a short goal of $155, in case I need to take the last resort option. This goal will be updated on Monday, and each root canal will be its own goal over the total amount.

I will also be updating this with emergency commission info in a couple of days. For now, I’m going to be dropping these characters for sale:
