Ressentiment

Posted 2 years, 9 months ago by JustAnAuthor

Ressentiment noun

:deep-seated resentment, frustration, and hostility accompanied by a sense of being powerless to express these feelings directly.

:a psychological state arising from suppressed feelings of envy and hatred that cannot be acted upon, frequently resulting in some form of self-abasement.

This weaponizing of ressentiment — a term borrowed from German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, capturing the deep grievance produced by feelings of both envy and humiliation — is possibly the defining theme in global politics right now.

— Ishaan Tharoor, Washington Post, 26 June 2018

But in between justice and ressentiment is a rich, gray area where schadenfreude can serve a valuable political purpose.

aka those posts that talk about someone else being happy/having successes and then bashing them for it

Dear Diary,

Tonight I was woken up by my two brothers shrieking about a cockroach that got inside the room we were in. I forgot how hard they could scream at a cockroach.

This site needs an option to let you receive notifications via e-mail so that you don't have to check it every hour or so to see what your mutuals did. I end up wasting time going on here just to reload the page to see if I have anything in my notifications to clear, despite the fact that I only have two people I receive notifs from.

Best Way to Experience a Show

Posted 2 years, 10 months ago by JustAnAuthor

MHA has been really popular lately, and It's making me think to myself how I don't watch the show, but still consume its media via fanfiction because of a TV Tropes deep dive. Truly, the best way to experience a show and its story.

Good Book 1 - Mother of Learning

Posted 2 years, 10 months ago by JustAnAuthor

Friendly reminder that whether or not a book is good is based on opinion and not fact, though there are objective ways to determine whether a book is good or not. This is all my personal opinion. Also, I'm not a professional reviewer. My wording will suck ass.

Just recently finished reading Mother of Learning, and it was a goddamn experience. I honestly recommend the book to anyone interested in high fantasy entrenched in actual rules for their magic*, as well as a well developed story involving concepts like time travel!

From the description of the book:

Zorian is a teenage mage of humble birth and slightly above-average skill, attending his third year of education at Cyoria's magical academy. He is a driven and irritable young man, consumed by a desire to ensure his own future and free himself of the influence of his family, whom he resents for favoring his brothers over him. Consequently, he has no time for pointless distractions or paying attention to other people's problems. As it happens, time is something he is about to get plenty of. On the eve of the Cyoria's annual summer festival, he is killed and brought back to the beginning of the month, just before he was about to take a train to Cyoria. Suddenly trapped in a time loop with no clear end or exit, Zorian will have to look both within and without to unravel the mystery before him. And he does have to unravel it, for the time loop hadn't been made for his sake and dangers lurk everywhere... Repetition is the mother of learning, but Zorian will have to first make sure he survives to try again - in a world of magic, even a time traveler isn't safe from those who wish him ill.

The author said the story started out as a way to flesh out their worldbuilding by making a story about someone living inside the world, so it already has a lot of cool worldbuilding, with established history, an actually dynamic political landscape (although the main plotline makes that sound a bit contradictory), and intriguing plot that hooks you in with their fun to read characters. Zorian is a character that many teens can sympathize (or, god forbid, empathize) with, with his dry humor, hatred of crowds and his own family's breathing down his neck, and general dislike of people. He immediately pulled me into the world, his dry wit and general aloofness something that I related with when I was younger (I read this a long ass time ago, but I only recently got back into it to finish reading the thing).

There's so much foreshadowing in this book. So many details you'd mistake for fluff or extra detail end up being important later on in the story. Seriously, the amount of Chekov's Guns I spotted was a lot. The author really knew how to apply writing tropes in a fun and informative way, adding to the story and making it work better rather than detracting from it due to clichés and the like.

The setting is interesting as well. I could never do it justice, nor could I even know where to begin. The continent of Altazia is the main continent where most the story takes place, and its history is so well mapped. From the small settlements that originally existed, to the colonization of the continent due to the rise of the Ikosian Empire, to the Splinter Wars, The Weeping, and even more. This author has worldbuilding skills I wish I could have! If you want to know more about the world, you can go to this link here in order to go to the author's blog involving the worldbuilding of the story's universe.

Honestly, the characters are what make it for me though. Like I said about Zorian, the characters pulled me into the story with their realism and complex personalities, with so many hidden depths in each of the characters that Zorian interacts with that isn't named Fortov! Zorian is like a grumpy Harry Potter, except he actually worked hard to get to the level of skill you see at the end of the story, is much more competent, and actually has depth in their character. His little sister, Kirielle, is mischievous imp that wakes him up routinely by jumping on top of him while screaming at the top of her lungs. She also often steals Zorian's notebooks and writing supplies. Fortov is Zorian's older brother, and is a lazy asshole. 'Nuff said. Zorian's mother is a social climber who constantly nags him about being "presentable" because he represents their family. His eldest brother, Daimen, is a world renowned treasure hunter and prodigy mage that overshadows him and messed with him as a child, leading to deep resentment involving him. Zorian's dad built the Kazinski family from the ground up, but is also looking down on Zorian for being "wimpy" and the like. This is just Zorian's family with the focus being mainly on Zorian, Kirielle, and Daimen, and yet they're all so well developed, that I honestly can't say everything in fear of spoiling the book. Of course, the people that Zorian likes the least and interacts with the least have less character depth, but they still have depths shown later on, like most of the characters you see in this book.

This book is great. I love the plot, the progression, the twists and turns, the ending, everything. The characters sometimes sound like they speak the same, character descriptions are sometimes lacking, and typos and the like appear more frequently nearing the end of the book, but I still love it from start to finish. Despite its flaws, I'd give the book like a solid 9.8/10. If the flaws I said above didn't exist, this story would definitely get a perfect score.

*To be fair, a lot of high fantasy books have rules for their magic, MoL just has more concrete rules than the ones I saw.

**I recommend reading the book before skimming through the Wiki, because Spoilers Abound.
