Val is more or less indifferent towards Xenisa, but feels as though she's not at all trustworthy. Because she sympathizes with Azeron and misses him, Val doesn't want anything to do with her or her creepy magic. Before he left home, she easily pissed him off often with her snarky attitude, much to Xenisa's enjoyment.
Xenisa harbors jealousy of Val because of the potential Azeron sees in him, due to her insecurity about her inability to practice magic as a child. She never allowed him to see any of these feelings, though, instead annoying him with pranks and other childish antics involving her black magic (which, needless to say, was obtained through... questionable means).
Val's relationship with Andreas has always been slightly strained, but not exactly bad. When he was younger, he felt pressured and intimidated by Andreas' expectations of him to be physically fit and become a warrior like he once was. He knows his dad means well and wants him to be able to defend himself and his loved ones, but Val wasn't interested in his way of doing things. I guess you could say he respects Andreas (especially for kicking Azeron out) but is unsure if he "loves" him, since they never had an emotional connection.
Andreas only wants the best for Valefar, but his idea of "the best" is Val being a physical protector of the family now that he himself is a disabled veteran. With a generally serious and battle-hardened disposition, the only "soft side" he has is for his wife. He cares about his kids but has a difficult time bonding with them, especially with how the stress of going to war has affected his psyche.
Val does love his mother, Daemila, but often felt suffocated by her coddling nature when he was a child. As he got older, she began overlooking him at times in favor of the youngest, Farinel, and as a result, he went to Azeron for a lot of his troubles instead.
But seeking comfort in his older brother didn't last forever, and when tensions between Val and Azeron eventually became dangerous, Daemila was unable to do anything about it. Val began pushing her away little by little, subconsciously resenting her for not doing more to stop it.
As Valefar's mother, Daemila loves him a lot, but feels lost on how to guide him through life. Her hands are often full (both figuratively and literally) taking care of their large family, and she regrets not being strong enough to fully stand her ground against Azeron. She feels partly responsible for Val's inner conflicts and feels she has failed Azeron due to not being there for him when he was young, and by extension, Val.
Overall, she's very apologetic, worries for his well-being, and wishes he would come home.
When Phen was adopted into the family, Val was the primary one who took care of him and showed him the love he needed. He always encouraged Phen to be kind and to do whatever brings him the most joy in life, no matter what.
Val eventually ran away from home in order to stop Azeron and to protect his family, especially Phen. He loves Phen and wishes he could spend time with him, but knows his quest is more important.
Phen appreciates the support Val offered him when nobody else did during a dark period of his young life, and looks up to him a lot. So when Val ran away, Phen soon followed after him, winding up in the large town of Mayfil. He did eventually find Val, but wasn't able to stay with him as it was too dangerous. He was forced to go back home, where he now focuses on his magical studies. He misses Val very much and is concerned for his safety.
