Exotaurs [Species info]

Posted 1 year, 10 months ago by Kerlasia

Introduction
- This is a page for Exotaur species info so my character descriptions don't get too long.
- Sol's monster form was for a long time meant to be one-of-a-kind, however, I recently started getting a lot of inspiration and felt compelled to make his form into a species. Because I felt a dilemma between keeping him unique and following through with my inspirations for creating other individuals of his kind, I decided on making an AU for the latter.
- In canon, Exotaurs are an ancient race that once existed, but faced near-total extinction following a major natural disaster. Sol is the only surviving member of the species.
- In the AU, which exists solely for creative purposes, the race is still living.

General info
- Exotaurs are a species of alien minotaur "hell monsters".
- They are generally well adapted to hot environments, and are able to tolerate extreme heat. They have high core body temperatures, ranging from 40-60c (104-140f). The ones who choose to venture into cold regions find that snow and ice melt around their bodies because of this.
- Various parts of their bodies are bioluminescent, most notably the eyes.
- They have 5 horns: two large horns on the top rear of the head, 2 smaller horns behind the jaws, and one central "unicorn" horn on the forehead. Shape varies wildly between individuals. - They have cloven hooves with two somewhat long dewclaws.
- Their manes grow down their necks and backs, stopping somewhere within the thoracic spine region.
- Their horns, claws, hooves, tooth enamel, and any armor that covers their shoulders, arms, and legs are made of a material that has a hardness comparable to that of diamond. It is also very dense, which contributes to their unusually high bodyweight.
- Their long claws are inspired by Therizinosaurus, and are designed for striking rather than piercing or cutting.
- The teeth vary between individuals, but they are generally heterodonts (different kinds of teeth in different areas of the jaw). Most of them have carnivore dentition. Omnivore dentition is uncommon, and herbivore dentition is rare. - They are social creatures and live in large societies/tribes.
- They cannot reproduce or be born. They do not have ages.
- All Exotaurs come into being as Nameless. As it implies, they have no name, and they wander somewhat aimlessly through the world. The time this phase lasts is different for every individual. When an Exotaur discovers its purpose, it becomes Exalted and its nature and physical form undergoes transformation. Some may never experience this even after many lifetimes.

Traits that distinguish Exalted Exotaurs from Nameless Exotaurs
- When Exalted, they receive a name given by the universe based on their life purpose.
- They acquire a unique white pattern on the side of the head and on the torso, referred to as their "mark". No two Exotaurs have the same mark.
- They have three eyes. The middle eye (usually a V or U shape on the top of the head) can see in both the visible spectrum and ultraviolet light.
- They have dense armor covering the forearms and lower legs, and sometimes the shoulders and elbows. The pattern of the armor varies between individuals.
- They gain extra bioluminescent patterns on the torso and sometimes on the lower body.
- They do not need to breathe, eat, drink, or sleep.
- They become immortal - they can feel pain and suffer but never die.
- They have disembodied voices. When they talk, their mouths do not move, and their voices emanate mysteriously from their general throat/chest area. They still have the ability to make real physical noises, and do it usually as an expression of emotion (vocalizing when startled, snarling, growling, roaring, sounds of pain, sighing or exhaling through nostrils, etc).

Height distributionIMG_20220523_105232_598.PNGTo convert a human height to Exotaur height, the formula is +2ft -2in. (Some of my characters are exceptions to this but it works for most).
For example: A 5'2" human would be 7'0" as an Exotaur.
To convert from Exotaur to human it's just the other way around: -2ft +2in An 8'2" Exotaur would be 6'4" as a human.

Trivia
- Their white marks may reflect ultraviolet light, which their 3rd eyes would perceive as glowing.
- They have no external ears like mammals do. Since their ears are just holes in their heads, the 4 horns on the sides of the head pick up subtle vibrations in the air to help them hear higher and lower frequencies and determine the direction a sound is coming from.
- The growls of larger Exotaurs are very low frequency and sound like distant thunder, similar to the territorial call of cassowaries (sound isn't really audible without headphones)
