Hello, I do remember Zakai! I'm glad to hear that they're still around,
To answer your question: the characters I've designed follow more lax rules for commercial / personal use than my art commissions. In general, I'm a big believer in people doing what they want with characters they own (as long as its respectful, and doesn't involve nft's or feeding them to ai). So by all means, do whatever you want with them, whether that's personal use or for commercial use like making and selling stories with them! I just ask that you'd credit me as the original designer (and if you want, I'd love if you let me know because I'd love to see what you do with them!)
The only point I'd say a commercial use fee and agreement would be needed for a character I've designed is if you're wanting to use my artwork of them to make a profit.
