Memento is effectively about the mindspace. Spiral, is representative of you, and how if you let the neverending Abyss drag you down, you'll never be free to live, and consequently, will die with nothing to show for it. So essentially, remember that you die. So, remember to live. Memento mori. Memento Vivere.

Years ago, after the barrier was sealed, the human government decided to try and further eradicate monster kind. They dropped into the hole in Mt. Ebott, a radioactive substance that quickly spread throughout the underground. What the humans didn't realize, was that it didn't kill all of the monsters, in fact, most were mutated, and only made stronger by the substance. Still, The Ruins were evacuated and blocked off.
