Histories and art show evidence of there once being powerful and mystical animals each which their own territory. Over time the descendants of bloodlines have lost their power and become more humanoid. 

These bloodlines still hold political power in most places but their magical power and physical strength is similar to that of a normal human, and the extent of the power of these ancient creatures as well as their form is much debated.
