I don’t really know whether to make three separate comments on each of the characters because I also just want to compliment your writing so instead I’m making one really big comment here!
While Anne is definitely my favorite character of yours, I can’t deny that I think I relate to Rachel more. But all of your characters have something that reaches out and grabs me. Anne’s fixation on taking other people’s perception of her as part of her whole instead of as opinions; Rachel’s need to be kept around via making herself useful to help others and thus be seen as “good”; Jackie perpetuating her bad behavior instead of bettering herself purely because she’s unable to handle the consequences and effort that goes into such a task; and all of their collective wants and needs to be seen as real, as human, as their own being despite their actions or personal qualms, to be seen as whole, as true, as real… to create independence in an area where they feel discouraged by the outside world to do so… it’s an emotion I haven’t been able to see captured anywhere else before or since. And I sincerely appreciate the effort you put into giving these characters depth and emotion.
And I also appreciate the passion you put into writing. You make sure only to leave aspects up to interpretation if they are poignant or otherwise impossible to answer, and all facets of their personalities have reasons and motivations behind them. Things happen, but they happen because of things that are also happening because of reasons bound to previous reasons and so on. I’m unsure if this is intentional or not, but so far I think it’s a stellar design choice to not really highlight the cryptids or monsters visibly. They are there, and they are a looming threat, but they are never the focus. The focus is the characters and their personalities, and I love both of those things.
I don’t know whether or not I’m accurately showing an appreciation for your characters and art with full sincerity or if I’m simply grasping to a facetious nature that one can consider “mine” in order to fully process the totality of my own being, or lack thereof, by complimenting your presentation of it, but I feel a level of appreciation for your characters and writing in which I wanted to showcase. Sorry if none of this makes any real sense, I’m not really proofreading this more than I am just making it up on a whim, cross-referencing and consistently not being able to find words that accurately convey what I’m attempting to communicate and looking up synonyms for surface-level substitutes… but maybe that’s me just being circumlocutory for the sake of it.
Whatever the case, I am fully interested in your characters and I think that’s neat. To an extent, at least, I’m not sure how much of this will be an actually positive or meaningful interaction for you or just something that comes and goes in your mind. Oh well.
