Sonja does not discuss the details of Cordelia's birth. Outwardly, she treats Cord as any other student. Inwardly, she feels that she is too soft with her, and thinks that other Sessin may be harsh towards Cordelia because of her entrance to their society.
Before Cord's birth, Sonja fought vehemently to have the baby admitted into The Towers. Otherwise, the child would have been left in the woods. An infant toxic to the touch would have left any good Samaritan dead.
Sonja is filled with a knot of inextricable and unexplained emotions for her mother. Something akin to love, hate, disdain, fear, awe, and anger. She is unable to express this to others because nobody else can truly relate.
Though she thinks of herself as very pretty, compared to the others, whom she thinks of as gorgeous perfection, she feels like the ugly duckling of The Towers. She throws herself into the tutelage of the Towers whole heartedly, and wants to prove herself as worthy of such a beautiful and elegant mother.
