breed history and standards

senegal hounds originated from crossing ibizan hounds, pharaoh
hounds, and the scottish deerhound. this cross resulted in a larger,
lanky but versatile dog. the cross is mainly used to protect the national
parks of senegal. they thrive with tracking and are extremely prey driven. they excel
in protection work also and are not known to be human aggressive or animal aggressive.
they are known for the triumphs in hunting down poachers senegal hounds need both
routine and constant training. they are not a breed for a novice dog owner. being extremely
 independent these dogs are known to push boundaries and when bored, can become extremely
destructive. they are a working breed first and foremost. the average lifespan for this breed is 10-12 years.
male weight ranges between 75-100lbs while females range from 55-85lbs. this breed, when not breed
responsibly can suffer from hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, and hypoproconvertinemia.
the breed club recommends breeders to test and have hips evaluated by the OFA before considering
breeding. senegal hounds are born with floppy ears and usually by the age of 6-8 months they stand.
coat type is usually determined by 6 weeks of age as these hounds can be either short hair or wire.
