He's what Jed would frame as a golden boy for the knights. As such, Jed feels a need to heckle Byron at every turn. Partly to try to knock him down a few pegs and partly just because it is fun and Byron usually offers amusing banter as return fire. If Jed left Byron alone, though, there would probably be no problem between the two.
