aaaaa so- like i was looking through some old scratch stuff and saw the dt we did in like 2016 or something lol (i used to be ravenpaw-warrior on scratch and recently got unbanned) and like i came across the character again and i was like "jhfdhfs what?? that design is so good and LOOK at that flower crown" and like my part of the trade was nothing compared to what you gave me and i recently came across you again and now you're one of my biggest inspirations even since like 2015 and i'm actually surprised we got to do a dt on scratch like almost 3-4 years ago lol <33

and it was so cool to see that design again, I'd totally forgotten about the wave of design trades I'd done and it was such a nice memory! n tysm, it's so nice to hear that~! <33
aa, the main thing is just to practice! I've had a lot of time to figure out designing -- back in 2012, my best art n designs looked like this!
I just recommend to constantly experiment with different colors and shapes, and not feel obligated to perfectly follow your own art style ^^ if you want to draw something differently than usual, don't be afraid to go way outside the box!
also, stock photos are great references -- there's a stock photo for just about everything, and it'll help you get a reference for how something should look, or an idea for a new pose or expression~
a good trick to learn how to draw something new is to first sketch it 3 times: once from memory/without a reference, once tracing a real photo reference, and then once on your own while looking at the reference! it'll help you see what areas you should change in your original drawing, and make it look recognizable in your style! I actually did this recently with a skunk, and mine looked like this! still needs work around the ears to look a little more skunky, but it's definitely better than the doodle I did from memory!
