These are my general preferences for trading adopts;

art > art vouchers > core/premium gifts > designs

art = you draw an artwork or several artworks in exchange for an adopt of mine.
art voucher = say Character A is worth $20. You pay for a $20 commission/adopt for me, and I will trade Character A to you. If I ever decide to sell that commission/adopt, I will not include the $20 because it was technically a 3-step trade.
core/premium gifts = gift me DeviantArt core membership or Toyhouse Premium in exchange for an adopt.
designs = trading an adopt for other adopts/designs. This is lowest on my priority list because I am always looking to reduce my adopts ;;
