what do you do when you think someone has taken heavy direct inspiration from/ borderline copied one of your designs? i dont want to start a fight or get cancelled or anything... i want to reach out to this person in DMs but is that the right choice? will they be upset? i just want to ask peacefully i dont know what to do

id say reach out in dms! try to be as respectful as you can too because theyll be more willing to hear you out (in my experience)

The first thing you should do- is figure out if they possibly could or couldn't have taken inspiration from you in the first place--- sometimes designs end up similar just by sheer coincidence, so taking a look around to see if they've favorited your characters/designs or have interacted with you before is a good first step.
If they don't seem to know you- then you know they didn't intentionally plagiarize off of your stuff. If they do seem to know you though- then you should DM them about it!

id say get a second opinion,,, sometimes designs just have coincidental similarities (such as similar markings with similar colors) , but it wouldn't hurt to dm the person and ask if they took heavy inspo or not from your designs
