Honestly a really stupid tip but that helps alot (that could be applied to anything tbh)... Do what you think looks cool! 

"aghh it doesn't make sense, why are the colors like this, why this, why that.." scratch all of that and do what makes you happy >:) I'd rather see a really funky shading than a scientifically realistic and boring one

Also don't be afraid to blend colors that may not work that well! When blending usually they neutralize eachother out and they become more pleasing. If you still don't like it that's not a problem, you can try again with another color! 

Last tip... Don't blend too much! By observing nature you can see that things are usually made of strong and sharp shadows but sometimes also soft ones! Imo strong shadows are more catchy, and soft shading is cute but can be a little boring... That's why I recomend using them both togheter! They look amazing when they are :)
