It's not about distance actually. Their connection is unlimited, even between realms, and if anything were to actually break it (temporarily), i.e going into an anti-magic field, they would both fall comatose until it were reconnected.

It could make for an interesting plot point, their consciousness existing in two points of time at once, make for a really fun story actually!
