I typically break them down into shapes, shapes connected by tubes, IC for instance is a big, circle head with a squarish torso and a triangle pelvis. Everything connected by bendy bits.
References are your best friend! Theres this book called 50 robots to draw and paint that I love that goes over stuff like types of wires and plantings along with showing them in action on various robots! It's the foundation of much of my style.
Its unfortunately out of print but you can find a paperback for like 8-15 ish usd on ebay and such! Theres a version with a red cover and one with a blue cover but iirc they're the same inside
