Personally my designs work better when I have some idea of what the character is like beforehand. Though my brain is an idea machine, starting from nothing can still be hard.
Also I tend to use layer filters on like… a solid color via clipping mask and then tone it down on whatever adds the most to the colors. I don’t always do this, but when I do I’m generally happy with the result.
Though generally I don’t have a lot of tips,, I tend to get a lot of ideas as I work and I have a natural eye for color, which although I haven’t studied color theory I have developed over my years of doing art.
NAMES THOUGH, those are fun. I always look up a name before I give it to a character to make sure it’s real, unless it’s a pun (like Gyummy)
Sometimes I have a clear cut idea but sometimes I research names. Especially for my East Asian characters I didn’t get help from my friends naming (which includes all of the ones in my HSR folder)
I wouldn’t suggest going to baby naming websites, if you ever need help naming characters I’d be so down.
oo this is so interesting! i also do the filter thingy to tone done some of my more saturated colours since i like my dark stuff!
with my names i usually base them off something which matches the theme; Mercy for exp. since shes a fallen angel:3 but i do always struggle alot with naming and the baby websites SUCK! i do have a few fantasy name generators i use occasionally when i feel stuck:3
i really like the way you colour your characters & i also love the way you animate your little somewhat chibi characters because its so cute:3 i genuinely just love your account in general and you also seem like a very kind person <3
thank u for a little rundown of how you create these characters! ill definitely try some of these
