It was originally because he lives just outside and guards a small forgotten back door into heaven - his real name long forgotten etc. I'm thinking of adding to it though - there are various exits to this reality (Gabriel's Staircase, God's Well, etc). I'm thinking everyone assumes the door is into Heaven, but it may actually be another exit.

Another exit, hm? That could be interesting! A door to Purgatory, perhaps? A door that leads into random celebrities homes? A door to a dreamy paradise only he knows about? I think it'd be interesting if it was another exit.
