well some times i look at the you know those factory machines or construction, cars.
i make shape of the guy/creature and then modify with plates and mechanisms, were i feel like were they wuld be, more space for joints, And that's honestly it. Not much but i hope it helpd ^^  
I'm just going by intuition at this point hahah
