lf critique/advice!

So I’m in a bit of an artistic rut at the moment and I think my issue is I struggle to think critically about my art without falling into a trap of “everything is awful and I should give up forever”

So basically I’m looking for some outsider’s opinions to tell me what’s good and bad about my art in a way that’s constructive and to give me some pointers on what I should do next to improve. I really benefit from constructive criticism but don’t really have any kind of platform or following to get it. I just kinda want some direction on where my weak areas are and where I should be focusing

Please don’t use my toyhouse art tab as a reference a lot of the recently uploaded art is actually old as hell and imo not an accurate representation of how I draw now, my DeviantArt is probably the best place to see my recent stuff!

I'm so sorry you're feeling this way! Have you considered you might just be getting better at art, and therefor just seeing more flaws? For example, when I first started drawing, I was really good at drawing noses, but now it's not as easy for me anymore. It's not because I've gotten worse, it's because I've gotten better at everything else, but it certainly doesn't feel like it.

Another thing to keep in mind is to find what you like. If you feel like your proportions are off, try working on realism and studies for a little while so you can apply that in your current art style. If you feel like it's too realistic or too stiff, try watching older animation and study it to figure out what exactly you want to emulate about it. Lean in to what you really like/want to be like.

If you see a mistake you've made in a drawing, avoid letting yourself fall into the trap of thinking 'oh no I shouldn't have drawn it/drawn it like that' and instead 'I'm glad I drew it, now I know what I need to work on.'

I found this little visualizer that personally helps me a lot. It makes me realize that everything I make is ultimately better than something I didn't make at all, and that everyone goes through this process at one point:

If you're still in a rut after a few months, try going to a craft store or library, find a few how-to-draw books or drawing exercises, grab a few new art supplies and just have fun with it. Sometimes it's easy to forget art is supposed to be fun, and finding yourself in a new situation with new art supplies and advice can be really helpful to get a fresh look. I hope this helps and I wish you well on your artistic adventures!
