Comments not liked by you

I've been wondering this for a while, as I have some specific/extra preferences myself and I wanna know if other people might relate or have similar opinions. Because that's nice lol

Think about any feedback, comments you have gotten here on your ocs, writing, art etc. Unwanted harsh criticism, rude comments... excluded. Is there a particular detail or feedback you don't like, even if the commenter has no bad intentions? Or for example, you feel the need to point out in games so nobody just writes about this one thing? Please do not name drop, this thread isn't meant to hate on anyone.

Also if you don't like this thread and have no experience to share, please block it and move on.

I'm gonna add a couple of my own

1. "your profile/website/code looks awesome." If I hate something, it's this. Please know that for an artist who wants to showcase their artwork, this is NOT what we want to hear. Sure I can only speak for myself here, but I've seen other people disliking it as well. The thing is, if this is feedback I would occasionally, and separately get. Sure. thank you! much appreciated. But I mean it in a "I show my artwork, Ocs" context in which this happens. If you didn't know, this is highly off-topic. My stupid ass code has nothing to do with my artwork or characters. it HOLDS the content. If the majority of the feedback an artist gets is this, it is extremely depressing and gives us the feeling our work isn't interesting in any way. Please expand from "uh pretty web design". This is not a code template.

Edit: 09.03.2024: I am extremely happy because the amount of comments I recieve about code rather than content are close to zero for the last few months. I haven't done much different, but I am glad its finally not happening as frequently anymore. I have also lost a few followers over on Neocities since I made my website much more content, rather than 'decor' focused. Just shows you how little people cared about the actual content I make. Thank you for leaving, in a good way. I couldn't care less if you like my button color, when thats really all you like.

2."Nice chara but I can't say much with no info". how about... actually looking at the character for more than a second? I summarize my profiles and always link finished ones underneath. If you look at them for 00.1 seconds, then yes, I too wouldn't see anything. How can you care so little. My profiles are self-explanatory. And even with JUST the summary, its absolutely something you can work with. This feels rude...

3. The whole comparison topic although, If the comparison is related to something I actually took inspo from I'm not too unhappy. I love these after all. But really, nobody ever mentions anything accurate to the tiny details. so its a "always bad case" in this situation. I guess its also because barely anyone cares to even read about them.

4. "You should draw for kids/books." I have gotten this kind of feedback more IRL rather than online. And it STINKS. I have no interest in creating child illustrations, or art targeted at a young audience. Idk if this is something anyone can understand but I want to be taken serious. This is the opposite of it.

5. "so cute" , "adorable". I know some people use this as a universal compliment but seriously, no thanks. To me, this is not a compliment (and slighly related to the above). I also don't aim for 'cute uwu art' and for that reason alone it is highly bothering to me. + It's quite empty and overused anyway. And In my opinion, it ignores the art effort and skill completely. Imagine a beginner artist's symmetrical icon of their dog oc, and some highly rendered fully detailed scene illustration. "cute" honestly feels like an insult there. This is just coming from my personal experience and view. If you love this stuff on your work, cool. But this isn't about you. /nm

6. "pet comments". I don't know if it's just me, but it annoys me to no end when I get "Aww I wanna pet" "*pets* "Would still pet this cutie". The most bothering aspect of this is that it is done on pretty much any art and any character. Whenever it be one of my horror-themed aliens, my grumpy dog pet OC who hates human touch or even regular humans. "cutie aw wanna squish that nugget :3" Shut up or I am getting violent

Please remember to be kind and respectful to the people commenting & complimenting you. They can't know some things are upsetting to you. Let your feelings out here instead.

Whenever someone comments that my character is another fandom character, or tags them as that, it ticks me off in a bad way :') I know people mean well, and that my character reminds them of another they like.... but sometimes they aren't that similar. Robert has been compared to billy hargrove a lot.... I have never received these comments here on toyhouse though!

Skykristal

Haurgrimr yea that sucks quite a bit. Didn't had the tag thing going on myself before though ( they tag their artwork like that when posting their art of your character I assume?) The comparison to other fandom's characters is probably the most common thing, which I don't blame anyone for. I get it. But I also don't quite like it as well. And yes most of the time it's not even similar. (Imo) With Robert for example I don't really see it? It's just the 80-90s approach sorta. But no specific person I would compare him to personally. But I also.. generally don't do that type of stuff tbh.

A few of my characters got compared to family guy characters before or like they belong to some kind of game, WoW and stuff. And I'm like.. who? 😬

Haurgrimr

Skykristal Sorry I forgot to mention the tags happened several times on tumblr! I also don't blame anyone for comparing to fandom characters, it's fine in the long run! Just a little annoying at times.

Lmao Family guy?? I can't see it when I look at your characters, but sometimes people just see things differently I guess.  :| I'd be so insulted if someone compared mine to family guy like excuse you? I also really do not see the WoW comparison either and I was an avid WoW gamer back in my day fkhjkg

im an "omg such a dreamie!!!!" hater :| just feels so tonedeaf for someon to imply they want to own something I clearly care about JRJRJJE ik not EVERYONE who uses it means it that way, but a lot of them do and it bothers me

ALSO when people are like "omg i need (type of art) from u" or like "i need to see (oc) in your style!!!!" I just hate when people imply they Want something from me idk. I don't take commissions and I have that listed on almost all of my art accounts, so having people say that just feels like they're trying to pressure me into doing art for them. like mate you don't 'need' art from me when there's 2746738382 freelance artists who draw as a JOB desperately needing people to commission them

nubifera

the "this looks like that character from another fandom" thing is ultimately what made me leave tumblr, it's so common there oof

another thing is "omg i wish i could afford to commission you", it's like.... pls don't guilt me into drawing for free or lowering my prices or making a discount i'm broke too lmao? i get that they probably don't mean it that way and are genuinely sharing their feelings/situations but that's how it comes across

and then of course there's unwanted criticism in a form of a joke, someone once commented "hammerhead shark haha" on one of my drawings where the character had wide set eyes... maybe a bit unproportionally so, i was a beginner artist, still not an excuse to make jokes at my expense

scotophase

sometimes people take joke comments on how freaky my style is/characters are a little too far and make me feel like my work is low-effort or undesirable.

i also get a little annoyed when people tell me that x character looks like (gender that they are not) as if it is something i need to fix and not how i intentionally made them look. or the more friendly and familiar "i think they should be this gender instead," repeatedly misgendering them, or drawing them in trades with a very different presentation or features that the other artist prefers.

the above are often done in a friendly way, so i am not sure if they are done with good intentions and just backfiring.

generally, i get miffed at anything that indicates that they didn't read the person's bio before judging (if it's not part of the thread rules to skip reading a bio), even if it's supposed to be nice.

fettuwuccine

just echoing people lol but comparing to other characters is definitely a big one. when I was like 13-16 my main ocs were feral cats which meant that at least half the comments were "are these warrior cats/warrior ocs" or "looks like x warriors character" even though they basically functioned entirely like humans and none of them actually looked like how any of the warriors characters got compared to lol. it was a small part of it but still definitely influenced why i stopped using those characters and don't use ferals much anymore. people also just have a really frustrating tendency to reduce animal ocs, especially ferals, to their species and completely ignore all of the development people make for them.

batsunsetz

uhhhh i dont like "your ocs are so interesting!" as the only comment. like yeah its positive but it kind of sounds like you don't know how to comment on writing when compared to art, or you uh. just noticed i have a lot written down and never read it.

i understand Liking Visual Arts of course but you can try... just a little more... than just saying "wow thats a lot of words"... also i do art as well its not like i have blank galleries lol

Skykristal

MeowMeow422 well ugh that sucks. can relate to that kinda. I don't use bases but this one time I used a blurry photo, edited it a bit, painted a few areas over etc to make it fit as a background for the character and literally, everyone was like "you did such a beautiful background and use of color" :/ Complimenting the stuff you really don't want compliments on, or that aren't the focus are actually pretty common to me. also reminds me of this one time I made little background elements to fill space in this one painting that took forever and everyone was like "nice little creatures in the background". 🙃 I didn't do it but I was like "thanks took 5 seconds in comparison to the main subject".

I don't blame anyone for liking what stands out to them btw. but from an artists perspective this stuff hurts quite a lot.

Skykristal

batsunsetz "wow thats a lot of words", I've gotten this exact comment before 😶
and really, what's the point in commenting then? I personally have a really hard time reading a lot, which is why I don't comment on the characters in deapth unless I'm in the right mind and its a character I actually want to read more about. forced comments with zero thought help nobody.
sorry to hear you got such feedback. unfortunately, a lot of words are the least liked compared to visual work, and yea even that can be rough.

atempause

"what drugs were you on when drawing this uhuhuh"

stop saying this to people making even slightly weird art i swear to god

Lilina

Back in summer, I got a comment by a guy saying that they like my concept art, but then it's followed by a claim saying that pixel art in indie games is done to death or something like that, and even said something like "Think of Hollow Knight but in Torivision". I am personally not a fan of how elitist that comment was, and I told them something like "I chose pixel art because it's pleasing to me" yadda yadda yadda. I understand that this guy's taste is a lot different compared to mine, but yeah as an amateur game dev, that comment has been bothering me for months. Games don't really need to look fancy to be considered good.

BLACKBIRD batsunsetz

i dont even have a ton of writing compared to some other characters, my codes may be a little intimidating but i take out like half of the sections lol. my main guys only have like four paragraphs and then a bunch of trivia cmon i know theyre more complicated themewise than a lot of ocs but if you cant handle the tws,, dont claim them. theyre stated clearly on the content warnings. come on

also an annoying thing is when people just comment on my characters gender/sexuality/other related identities, even if its in a "hell yeah" kind of way. ive had that problem with ic a lot i know hes very loud about it but he has other personality traits as well,,

also im sorry that you get the same comments :( ive read your th bios i cant believe that some people would get mad about having to read like. two or three paragraphs
