How has your art style changed?

Posted 1 month, 18 days ago by Lordbrianc

I'm kind of curious if anyone's had like any sort of major art style change? Like if you, for instance, used to draw anime and now do realism, semi-realism, vice-versa, ect. Basically, a whole genre shift. This could also apply to subject matter too, I know some people go from drawing feral/antrho to drawing solely humans (as did I).

Were these changes intentional? Like did you actively decide, hey, I'm going to change my art style into something I like more, or did it just happen naturally? Are you actively in the process of trying to change it right now?

I kind of went through this a few years ago because I used to make very painterly, realism type of art (mostly traditional too). It didn't translate well to drawing my characters so that's why I decided to change it, and ngl it was a goddamn struggle. I didn't know how to do lineart at all, that was probably the biggest struggle but also the place I grew the most. My style now is sort of semi-realism-anime-ish, I can see myself wanting to try to reintroduce more of a painterly, organic feeling while keeping the lines and structure that I so love...

Maybe your art style has changed but not in the way of specific genres of art, if so just feel free to describe how that happened in your own way

SparkyKinetic

My art styles gone through several different major changes that have all happened kind of naturally:

When I felt like I really had a style at first, it was more on the cartoony side. I was drawing media like Sonic, Undertale, and Splatoon, and later surrounded myself with cartoony artists as well when I first joined Instagram. However my style slowly became more on the cartoony-anime ish hybrid side after consuming a few different medias that are either anime or anime-like, and how I wanted to improve my human anatomy more. at the current time, I haven't been drawing a lot to see any consistent changes, but I like to think im style adaptive, rather than have an art style; though im still in the search of adjusting my own style

Skykristal

oooooooo major style change, which was intentional. I won't lie, it took me a good while to get where I am now. it wasn't like.. "I wanna draw like that and apply details. boom". It was quite rough to the point I wanted to give up and stick to the things I did. But the urge to get into different vibes of art was bigger.

Old style is very cute, chibi "blob" heavy. I didnt knew how to anatomy, and I refused to improve for a very, very long time. To be fair, I also had no interest to, and was happy with it at this time. But when I started to change interests it was a PAIN in the ass to get away from it :( Because when you wanna draw none-cute stuff as a chibi/cutsie artist it has an extremely huge learning curve. I at least expirienced it that way. I still to some degree can't draw things not cute, but it got a lot, like a loooot better, which I am definitely proud of. (and when I get comments indicating I failed, I'm literally pissed.. I wish I wasn't but if I get a "so cute" (as in, "so cute and adorable awww petpet :3333". not in a normal "oh how pretty" way) comment on an artwork not intended to have this vibe, I cry-. Back in the days, it was even worse because I couldn't get away from this style at all)

Style changed a ton (I tend to experiment tho.. its a mixed bag). Which shows a lot more mature anatomy and better shading/rendering as well. I went more into the stylized semi-realism world which I am most interested in. In fact, its hard for me to like anything but this. My use of the airbrush also chnaged. I actually use and love the airbrush very much, but I use it way different, and it seems more intented rather than dirty soft shading. I dont like it when a style has this sorta dirty muddy thing going on, which my old style had in many areas. Even backgrounds. I mean... who the fuck renders backgrounds with an airbrush??? (actual backgrounds, not color & pattern)

when it comes to "techniques" I sorta just improved what I already did before. Paintings, rendered art, detail etc. None of this changed much. However something that changed actually, is using texture. (texured brushes, not rendering textures) along with going slightly more sketchy, but just for some pieces. I wouldn't call it a style.

as to "what I draw". Yes heavy change naturally... but also intentional in a way?. My old style does show human figures. but that was rare. I was a feral artist and only a feral artist. Anthro? whats that? My style was also just completely unfitting for it. Even though I liked cute stuff, I didn't like it at all for human or anthro characters. Only for some things, which included feral characters. If I would imagine my OCs with the style I had back then... good god D: ( I actually made an experiment with this )

This was just one change tho, I had a couple, minor ones, also changed back and forth here and there idk, but I think this is the most visible and most intentional change of me wanting to get better but at the same time going for something where nobody goes "aw" all the time. I did change my style for myself though, idk if it sounds like I did because of others. But it surely plays a role somewhere and I think it also motivated me (because it annoyed me). The "old" state also includes a ton of traditional artworks as well btw. But I was less into drawing OCs in that time period.

well that was a lot of text. I started rambling like crazy sorry about that XD

how it's going

i started off art toxic dog/wolf with wings artists. why was that a genre of an oc back then i honestly still do not know. at some point i made a "human" oc bcs i was watching a shit ton of anime and there are not dogs in anime, i wanted anime oc. and by that i mean it had chibi anatomy and very badly copied naruto artstyle. that art is long lost tho, all i got are those dogs. the cursed chibis that i tried to pass as "its not chibi, it's full human its just my art style" eventually managed to get to an actual human looking characters, never really returned to animal characters for my own stuff

My art style over the years (by year) ^

I didn't originally have an art style, I just kind of drew blobs with faces that I said were animals but nowadays may be the ugliest crap I've ever seen.

Eventually, in March 2016 (half a year[?] after the first drawing in the spoiler), I had a bit of a weird anime (barely even anime at all) art style. I drew colored lineart stuff because I thought it was cool and had probably the cringiest phase of my art style ;-; They still looked like blobs, just very, very, very slightly better. I also was very obsessed with the songs Calling All The Monsters from the Disney show A.N.T. Farm and Discord by TLT. And yes, I was also MLP obsessed. The year ended off with me making some animation memes (with a bad cringey thumbnail with random floating text, of course).

2017 was the year of my OC Charlie, a character who's design was quite obviously ripped off from my friend (he's redesigned now, just haven't posted him on here yet). A brown dog. With shapes or something.... And no lines. He was my sona for that whole year, and was mainly used to practice vector mode on Scratch. I did improve a bit with my regular art, though. It became a bit more bearable now.

I didn't do much art in 2018. I ended up going on a hiatus for half a year. It did start to resemble something slightly better, though.

2019 was the big year. I started focusing on making animation memes, and my animating got better. The issue was, I was very, very, very cringy... Veptus was made that year. I made him when I realized none of my characters were unique, and... Then my cat-dragon-skeleton-zombie was born. My art definitely improved. Still not great, but a lot better.

2020 was... interesting. It was 2020. I didn't do too much, but my art started to resemble my current art more. I also joined some of my first DTAs.

2021. Oh boy. I entered A LOT more DTAs and made A LOT more memes. I ended up noticing how old my old cringe was, so there was more hope. I started drawing on Clip Studio, so the quality got better. My animation got better too. Sorry the second image is blurry, I'm too lazy to fix it- YAY THE EYES GOT BETTER TOO!! Uh, I did a lot, that's all I'm gonna say for now.

2022. WE'RE ALMOST DONE!!!! My art seriously improved this year, and I learned how to tween my memes a lot better. Though, there was a problem. I entered for a character in a DTA 16 TIMES and I didn't win. Not because the immense lore I gave him was bad. My art just. Wasn't. Good enough. And I lost. It crushed me. I'm still hurting a bit from it. I was gonna get a BUDSIE of him in celebration if I won. Anyways, I'm not gonna be bitter anymore. It really helped me improve my art and animation skills! Also, Goldenlight was born :3 Near the end I was sadly stuck doing stuff on my Kindle, due to my computer breaking. I did get used to it though, and I'm still drawing on it!

2023, ONE MORE YEAR TO GO!!! Well, it's not very different from now! I got way better at shading and I got very experimental with my art. My animating improved IMMENSELY, and I got this ToyHouse account near the end of the year! I also got ArtFight and Reddit.

2024. We did it. We're here. Well, I mean, if you check out my account now, you know how my art is! I still have examples though that I am proud of :3

i think my style is and has always been more cartoony than anything else but maybe more of a cartoon/anime hybrid now especially with the eyes, i used to just draw circle eyes lol. when i first joined th i was in a human drawing phase so you can't tell if you look at old pages here lol but i used to almost exclusively draw feral with a little anthro mixed in, im more comfortable with humans than i used to be i just dont really enjoy drawing them as much lmao but they still look fine imo. most of the changes were pretty natural, the stuff i can remember choosing to do was switching to coloured lines maybe 3 ish years ago, adding eyelashes 2 ish years ago, and last year making the inside of human ears a bit more detailed following one of those amongus tutorial things

Lordbrianc

Skykristal damn that's quite a change! must be satisfying to look back and compare how it's grown.

Skykristal

Lordbrianc ahh thank you for saying that! I actually have days where I feel like it didn't change as much as I would like, but on other days I have the exact opposite feeling haha <3

honee_pie__

i dont want to pull out 50 different examples so feel free to peruse my art tab for visuals, but i started as a cartoonist, stayed that way for YEARS, went more anime, went semi realism, now im back to anime-cartoonish

considering how long ive been drawing youd think i have this figured out but im indecisive and trying to figure out what i like while still being able to sell it for income bshshs (below image is a chibi of my art rn. i dont have any fullbodies that arent cheebs rn)

My current style in 2024:

I still use the style from October - December

My new chibi style, I use this for full-body the most since i haven't firgue out what my regular full-body'd actually look like yet

77489300_fG6oC0uh7mYlymp.png77645561_MuZxC8s1hTRi0tz.png

Style i mostly use for personal/other art:

I learned alot from other artist, buttt i still need to leran how to draw perspective, side-profile and other view plus anotomy etc etc.

The traditional art style is not used often since not a lot of ppl i know is familiar with it, so i use the 2nd pic and old style instead

This is what a lot of my old art looks like-! Messy coloring & I used the symmetry tool a lot rather than drawing for myself-!

I unfortunately don't have any of my older art archived but here's a drawing i made 3 years ago of me REPLICATING my old art styles using my OC sprite!! https://toyhou.se/23719328.sprite-dreemurr/gallery#76361843

My very first REAL art style (the one from when i was 6) wasn't really inspired by anything though by the time i was 9 i was starting to get into digital art and my style was PRETTY influenced by anime...albeit the way i drew the eyes back then was the result of me drawing a realistic eye, liking how it looked and doing a bad job at replicating it (was never really into anime though, my older siblings were REALLY into it though tbh the only anime i liked at the time were sailor moon and pokemon)

I used that art style all the way up until i was 11, which was during the whole cringe culture/sans fangirl cringe compilation era of the internet was at it's peak and i was WAYYY too into it than i really should've. I would constantly see other kids my age get dragged for using the circle tool in their art (which i did ALL THE TIME) so i felt pressured to change my art style....and the new art style i chose would later go on to evolve in the current art style i have now! Tbh aside from the fact that it was due to cringe culture, i'm glad i changed it bc i'm VERY HAPPY with now my art looks now.

My current art style is sort of a combination between cartoon and anime, with some inspirations being steven universe, vivziepop and the stereotypical 2016 tumblr art style

Smugeru

I feel like my art style has changed a LOT in these past 6 years, and that for the past  year its kind of been in a standstill.

Here you can quickly see how my stuff has evolved:

I have actually changed from drawing exclusively humans to doing all sorts of anthro and even feral art! It started at the beginning of 2023 when I was like “I wanna learn to draw animals!” And now I have a fursuit. That escalated quickly.
