Refrence-making

So instead of sitting and making new designs that I don't have time to flesh out as OCs I decided on making references for existing characters and I sometimes just feel like I'm missing something visually or not doing something right.

Here are my two most recent references, that I made this week.

Now, I know that the text is very plain but I didn't want to make it too hard to read.

And neither did I shade them because most artists I know (including myself) really prefer flat colored refs rather than shaded ones.

Am I really missing something? Or is it just about practicing and becoming better at drawing clothes? I'm sometimes wondering if I'm trying to be too fancy with custom backgrounds or text but I might just be projecting since I personally prefer gray backgrounds.

RedRarebit I don't know if it's okay to ping or not, I'm still cofnused about it on TH -

But thank you for the example you linked, using Nonny! I used that "sticker" look in references before (Here) But for some reason I stopped. You're right though, the grid looks better than just a flat color. And it's less straining on the eye than a full background (Like a large stock image in 30% opacity).

The first link doesn't work for some reason but thanks for the second one!
