I really love my characters and the long, super complex and intricate story and what it symbolizes, but OML I also sometimes want to just have like 5 characters and have them exist in a void and just interact chikn nuggit style

Why not both? Pocket dimention is a great idea. You don't have to be limited to one story/universe.
For example, I have three stories (currently active, many more old/retired ones). All very different genres. Two of them have deep lore and complex stories, and one is just a casual slice of life for when I want to have fun with some silly guys hanging out.

i think of it like how older anime and cartoons (before the advent of on demand streaming) would have 'filler' episodes! there might be a huge epic overarching plot, but sometimes there's a few episodes where its just silly and mundane, i.e. like the common trope of a beach episode
i also like both so it's also hard for me to choose :')
but i also like monster of the week stuff plus modern fantasy. so i have a story that is essentially ghost hunting of the week but i have a "main cast" and "everyone else". the main cast is the one that has a deeper, complex story but the "everyone else" is where i simplify characters as much as i need. and even then, since the main story is so loose i can follow a basic "slice of life" style for them too, just as an extra fun thing rather than a "part of the main complicated story"
so it might be a good idea to simplify your story enough for wiggle room of fun SoL scenarios w/ a main cast or have the extra characters as the SoL setting
I wish if I could make simple lore but I just can't, anytime I decide to make a short story it ends up being super detailed deep thing.. I think it's cuz I spend too much time thinking rather than writing what's in my head :/
I do both. I have a little story thats about a tv show thats a mix of welcome home, mr rodgers and themed tv shows, with hoasts, show segments, and episode line ups like the sprouts channel on tv
