Any tips for making a cyberpunk setting? I'm mostly inspired by the game Stray, so I was thinking lots of bright lights, futuristic, stuff like that. Also fashion is important to cyberpunk I believe, so I'll have to modify a lot of the character outfits, but it sounds fun!

if you enjoy the visuals of stray it may be of interest to look into the hong kong city of kowloon ! specifically the kowloon walled city, which was formerly the densest populated place on earth before its demolition. it’s very interesting to research not only from an architectural standpoint, but from the standpoint of ethics and humanity.

cent already mentioned, but cyberpunk isn’t just ‘cyber’, even if the general aesthetic has kind of been watered down. the punk is important as well! with packed dark futuristic slums, there’s bound to be struggles of all flavors one can have characters in the narrative resist and overcome.

i do also think it’s important to be aware of heavy orientalism in the portrayal of cyberpunk by non-asian developers/studios/etc. i’ve seen wonderful portrayals of cyberpunk settings by artists from japan, hong kong, and china - its has heavy roots in those countries! but it’s also far too common for people to see these cultural nods from these works and then poorly genericize them into the ‘asian/oriental’ aesthetic.

it may seem ‘easier’ to just lump everything into one, but it’s far more rewarding in the long run to properly research the cultures of places you’re taking aesthetic inspiration from, even if your cyberpunk setting is in a fictional world!

Okay what I'm gathering:

- Add different societal classes with different levels of access to technology and resources - Add a conflict that effects all classes - do research on places cyberpunk is inspired by
