So I'm mostly just asking this to see what kind of answers I get, and also it seemed like a fun question.

For me, I'm honestly just kind of... Confused by the point of them if that makes sense? A lot of them are pretty cute, I admit that, but I don't think I could ever own a CS design since I myself like to have a lot of freedom with my characters, and not having full rights over a design would feel really constricting, no matter how small any restrictions are. Of course that's just my own opinion, and who knows, maybe someone can enlighten me to what makes CS so popular and loved, ha ha! ^^

Well, considering that I have a MYO slot (In that case, Vendetta) from a closed species (That being the Lagmas), I have a mixed opinion on closed species in general. I do like the concept and idea of a closed species (Such as Pacapillars), but I'm not a fan of most designs of a CS, but that doesn't mean I hate them at all. However, most can be handled very poorly, and many CS caused too much drama in the community. The only known CS that I heard drama from is of the Wyngros group, since I once saw a journal on DeviantArt saying that they left the group due to drama, if I remembered correctly. I usually prefer Open Species over CS, because everyone is allowed to make their own without permission, and it causes less drama.

Edit: Gotta agree with Wanco-Alien on Open Species. They deserve more love.

Wow it was really interesting to read all your guys responses! I feel a lot more wise lolll. I totally agree how a lot of CS I've seen can be... Kinda not CS worth. Which is why to be honest my favorite kind of CS I've seen have been the really alien ones, like plant-fu for example (they're so cute man those things really tempt me to break my no species rule   , they have such a creative face shape)

I like them... I personally love MYOs the most because I think the restrictive nature of traits and stuff pose a really nice design challenge and that can be really helpful when I'm feeling art blocked or something else. As for prices, sure they're high but... they would not be that high if they didn't sell. Artists are allowed to post anything they create at any price they want. Want to sell a stick figure for $100? Fine, go ahead. If it doesn't sell at that price, you lower it until it does. Repeat. NOT to mention it's a way to help support artists I enjoy! So if I like an artist I wouldn't mind paying more for something.

Personally my favorite types of CS are the generic kemonomimi types, I will 100% call myself out on this. I love kemonomimi characters and even though they are "animal ear people + something", if the lore is enough to my liking I will absolutely be interested. I just can't really connect with things that are too animal in nature. Deviate too much from a human look or go "too furry" and I will not be interested.

Uh. Anyway I think they are fine. They don't hurt anyone so let people have their expensive hobby.

CS are a fun design challenge, but I rather not get involved in CS too much. I'm very uncomfortable owning my own CS unless if the lore is something I could like, and I actually feel guilty if I ever make an OC that's similar to CS roles so I sometimes feel like I have no choice but to get a CS of it haha

Though as much as I can't be fully free in CS, it's fun to be part of someone else's world once in a while

CS is pretty fun if you're aspiring to be a designer, but considering the gossip and drama going on, I don't really involve myself more than either making a MYO or applying as a guest artist haha

However, I gotta admit that all CS are starting to seem literally the same and I'm still shocked that OS is extremely underrated, too. I'm not gonna say what makes CS seem so similar to each other but if you've been watching CS for a bit, I bet you can get this too hshs

as a cs owner i must say i quite enjoy them, though i can understand how people might dislike them! a lot of cs communities can be strict and MYOs pricey, and not sure on the legalities of revoking a design that someone made. i believe more systems should be like with sushidogs, like if someone violates a rule the design is still in the owners possession, it just isnt a part of the species.

Personally, CS don't appeal to me. For starters, there's a lot of toxicity and a huge race to be "the most original as possible" when it comes to making them (there was drama over two species having a similar name despite the creators never meeting). There's also people who use them as a status symbol and get on a high-horse because they own a popular closed species and start attacking people for having a slightly similar design. to make things worse I've noticed a lot of CS recently have very similar traits and concepts so I think these issues are going to get worse.

The strict rules are a major turn off since I like to involve my characters with my own lore and worlds and you can't really do that with a CS since it's not 100% yours. There's also changing the designs which looks like a hassle because if you're unhappy with it and want to change it you have to make sure it fits in the guidelines, get it approved, and if it's not approved too bad you're stuck with a design you don't like.

I'm also not huge into the adoptables scene and how characters are basically treated like trading cards (and a lot of CS end up being like that) since I like developing and fleshing out my own stuff. Going back to the strict rules part most (if not all) CS are super limited in what you can develop on your own. Also, most CS because they get traded a lot the prices skyrocket and as a person with expensive hobbies as it is (ex: art toys) I'd rather save my money for more stuff for said hobbies.

@Zehith, I hope you don't mind me voicing my thoughts but I don't really see the problem with buying designs to use as trade fodder, haha. I mean they bought the design, it's theirs.Trade fodder has an end goal ofc, people aren't just hoarding designs, they're being resourceful and are aiming to trade for a specific design, which they will likely use! And the person who gets the "trade fodder" will either give it a home (like you wanted) or use it to trade for a different design they'd enjoy! In the end, every design gets a home sooner or later, and honestly, It comes off as pretty snobbish to insult people over how they use a design THEY paid for.

Once again, these are just my thoughts, and you're welcome to disagree with me ^^
