Favourite Bugs?

Posted 6 years, 5 months ago (Edited 6 years, 5 months ago) by Mothman

As someone with a huge interest in entomology (and a desire to pursue it as a career), I often find myself thinking about bugs a lot...

Lately I've been thinking a lot about weevils! They're cute lil' guys with long heads, and they're a very diverse family too.

Anyways...I've come over here to the forums to ask if anybody's got any neat bugs they like and wanna share! I just love how diverse these animals are...

(If you're the type of person to go "EW I HATE ALL BUGS I HOPE THEY DIE" then....please just don't bother ;v; This is a Cool Bug Appreciation Thread! Same can be said for those afraid of bugs! I advise not looking at this thread as what you might see might make you uncomfortable.)

They're just such cute little princess bugs and I adore them.

Rosy maple moths are a def close second, though.

That is the face of a friend right there and nobody can tell me otherwise.

but uh, yeah, I love buggos. I mean, I did even create a thread asking to see bug-based OCs for a reason ~ (seems good enough reason to revive it I think ~)

So I read this as favorite mugs at first and I was oh cool, but then realized what it actually said

Anyways, in all honesty, I love Madagascar hissing cockroaches!!!! I'm my middle school, we had a group called wetland watchers and one of the things we did was show off and educate people on the animals, and the ones I always showed off were the Madagascar hissing cockroaches because they were just really cool to me

This thread is great, when I was like 3 I was telling people I wanted to be an entomologist. Back then caterpillars and butterflies were my favs. I still love them but now spiders are my favorites. I also love bees (they're so cute and derpy) moths and mantasis a lot. I got a picture of a bee with its tongue out recently, if I remember I'll post it up later when I'm on he computer (if someone wants to see it, ping me as a reminder!)

I love cockroaches of all kinds. Like all kinds. All. So cute, so friendly. My dream DREAM is to have a giant rhinoceros cockroach, they are expennnsive though. And my fiancee isn't totally on board with a $200 roach. Might convince her with some other species one day. Prob not hissers though. I've heard lots of people say they can be realllly noisy depending on personality.

I alsoooo love House centipedes, we get them at work alll the time. I'm the dumb one chasing them down a factory floor to get them to the vents that lead outside. And solifuges (aka sun or camel spiders), I am terrified of spiders and hated them when I first saw them but the more I learn about them the more I would kill to have one (they do not do well in captivity sadly, and can have pretty big appetites and if they miss the meal their bite isn't pleasant!). I did have someone suggest a vinegaroon instead. They look a little scarier but are tempting.

Oh hey Entomology friend! I actually am an Entomologist, and wanted to be one since I was a teeny kid. nvn If you have any questions about the field or career paths, feel free to hit me up. That info was hard to find for myself before I actually went and majored in it.

My favorite insects are beetles, particularly scarabaeids! But I also love fulgorids, mantispids, megachilid/bombus bees, and select neuropterans, like antlions and lacewings.

I love all insects of course tho... when I was in college, I worked in insect outreach and upkept their specimens. I used to keep many different kinds of mantises, exotics and regular kinds (if I caught one out in the field I would always hand-raise it, they're so cute)... different hissing roach species, june bugs, lubber grasshoppers, molio worms and their beetles... millipedes (even tho they're not insects) and at one point I ended up with a breeding pair of kabutomushi beetles, though they only lived a few months. nvn

Edit: Forgot to mention wasps scare the crap out of me, but they're gorgeous. Yet so evil

okay not technically a bug but I lov australian christmas spiders (Austracantha minax)christmas-spider-minax.jpgthese cuties are members of the orb weaver family & build big webs with other christmas spiders. They're harmless to humans. You see them more usually in summer hence the name :v

I dug up some old pics of my past buggy pets nvn
I didn't take pics of all of them sadly, like my boxer mantids or my hissing roaches. But I have a few ones of entomology work out in the field, I thought those might interest you also.

Light trapping! The light draws in insects, both flying and crawling, and the white sheet is to see them for easy capture. This is fun because you have to get used to getting all manner of bugs in your hair, on your face, on your clothes... in your clothes... but you do get to see some really neat insects for all the trouble. It's best to do this on a new moon or when the moon is covered by clouds.

These are spiny leaf insect eggs. I had to sift through a bunch of dirt and frass to collect them... these are only a tiny portion, there ended up being well over a few thousand!

Anyway, sorry for the spam! nvn There's more on my instagram (here) if you're interested, though it also contains tons of pictures of my cats.
