Menya World and Memorials Lore

Memorials are a slow-growing species living on the planet Menya. They live for an average of 200 human years. Memorials look to the future and focus their evolution on benefitting future generations over sustaining present survival. They are a species that thrives on privacy and personal inclusion, often leaving out interspecies interactions and remaining migratory.

Memorials come in all shapes and sizes and colors. While hair color seems to be traced by lineage, the color of skin and pattern marks is not as predictable and sometimes can happen at random.

Every Memorial holds the ability to share memories and knowledge with other Memorials. By entwining their tails, Memorials can share a mind space and freely communicate ideas and memories with each other. However, while every Memorial has this ability, it is considered taboo within their culture to perform this except in two scenarios: a mother with her child, or two intimate partners. There are some Memorials who break this taboo and find the ability to not be restricted to only these relationships, but this mindset is rare.

There are a couple times that the Memorial’s markings will glow when born with natural marks. They will glow when tails are entwined and give off a bright light that is meant to scare away predators during times of vulnerability. They will also glow when a Memorial is experiencing intense emotion (happiness, sadness, fear, anger, etc) as another defensive measure against predators. Memorials are known for fleeing and hiding from danger than facing it head-on.

Memorials are often sought after by hunters. Some are captured and sold as pets or servants to wealthy travelers and businesspeople who desire a fancy “commodity” in the form of a Memorial. They find both the Memorials’ appearances as well as their story-telling ability to be fascinating. Some hunters poach Memorials because their hair is some of the softest material available and their organs are said to have mystical, ancient healing abilities that can result in potent medicines to cure grave diseases. Because of how hunted they are, Memorials tend to stick in familial groups to protect one another.
