To be honest I can only agree to that. I've a few chars like that too a good example being Freya Sigurðardóttir which the url is changed to freya-sigur-ard-ttir- and I honestly prefer that to just Sigurdardottir...
Hi! I'm going to try and make this quick, because I have a lot to say.
I've noticed recently that, for some reason, the staff has changed accented letters into their plain counterparts. When I made a tab for my character Lúcio Souza, instead the link came up as; http://toyhou.se/641007.lucio-souza/1171148.lucy, even though his main page link of 'l-cio-souza' is perfectly serviceable.
I wanted to see if this was only for tabs, so I tested it with another of my characters, César Desrochers, and sure enough, it became cesar-desrochers. This would be all fine and dandy if it weren't for the fact that these are not their names. Accents aren't just lines you put on a name to make a character seem fancier, it has a significant change on a word or name. For example, you could send your Spanish friend a sweet "Prospero año y felicidad" that you learnt from a cool christmas song. But that accent is just too hard, right? So Prospero ano y felicidad is fine.
Except you just made a weird sexual advance on your friend by wishing them to have a prosperous anus. You can see more of those disasters here.
I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, if it's just a consequence of moving to a new domain, but it's something I have to keep. This happens to me over and over and over again, on gaiaonline, on weheartit, on tumblr, on discord, on my own damn writing documents because the font won't support it! Imagine if every time someone put up a character named Kaitlyn, that the site changed it to 'Caitlin' because it was 'easier'. It's just as annoying and insulting, and the fact that many names using diacritics are 'ethnic' just makes it all the worse.
Lúcio is not the same name as Lucio, César is not the same name as Cesar, Aýnabat, Noël and François are not Aynabat, Noel and Francois. And l-cio, for coding purposes, is just fine.

EDIT: As I've mentioned in one of my replies, URLs can actually support diacritics! This is shown on the wonderful site Polyvore;

As you can see, when it is copy pasted into a document such as this one, you can see the code that allows diacritics when it is clicked on. Now that I know this is possible, I can't really see a reason to be forcing me to spell my characters names incorrectly.
Wait what? I read your post two times but don't understand... q_q Please tell me if I understood this completely wrong, I'm gonna try to recap: On the old TH, special characters in character link URLs were replaced by - but on the new TH, they are replaced by their "normal" counterparts?

@artyrambles yep, you're right! I wouldn't say normal, it's not #problematic or anything, but they're just accented letters. And sometimes they're even letters on their own, like ñ and å.

I think I don't actually have any characters with accented letters in their names, which is strange now that I think about it. I think personally it wouldn't bother me if for example one of my characters with an ä in their name (if I had any) was spelt with an a in their link instead. I never looked that closely at the character URLs, tbh. But it wouldn't hurt anyone to change it back to dashes I guess? From what I've read though, programmers generally see replacing diacritics/accents with plain letters as more intuitive for the user so that might have been the idea behind doing this. It depends on what the majority of the users wants, I suppose.

LemonTea Thanks for letting us know. The removal of support for accents is 100% a coding side thing and absolutely 0% a xenophobia thing. Or rather, I guess its more like the default state of coding is that accents and special characters aren't supported*. There's probably no chance of us adding url support for accents since I think that's an internet protocol thing but I will def. ask Lulu to look into adding support back for display on pages & the tabs section you mentioned.
As for where you want to post your comments/suggestions - honestly, both the to-do list and the forum mostly serve the same function in terms of getting it seen. I've just been busy the past week so a bit slow on the replying. It's up to you. I think making a thread is better when you want to open it up to other people's suggestions and whatnot, and a post in the to-do list thread is better for things that are yes/no questions.
Literature submissions are still in testing. Please look forward to it.

Bringing this back bc I can't upload half my characters because of this and it's been a month. I still don't know why it wasn't kept the same! I don't mean to be rude but names are important especially on a site like this.
Nereiix Thanks for replying!! Unfortunately, I in turn do not think anything you are saying is true either.
For starters, the developers did lose time. They lost time by changing it from - to the accent-less characters. In fact, they'll spend even less time changing it back because I can safely assume that they have backups of their previous code.
Second, the URL definition is right!! It is a reference to a resource. So, using Lucio to reference to the resource of Lúcio is incorrect, because, as I can literally not stress this enough, they are not the same name.
Third, why does Jean-Philippe get to have their name spelt correctly? URL coding can actually support diacritics, as I recently discovered on the site Polyvore;

There! That's the code. Now I don't have to disrespect foreign people because it 'takes too much time'. And if they don't want to do that, if they can't spell it right, don't spell it at all. L-cio isn't the same as changing the entire name like Lucio is.
