Character theft questions

I've heard there's a lot of characters thieves on TH, that's why people recommend a lot uploading all the pictures with a watermark for all the non authorized users. Also a lot of people put warnings forbidding to steal their characters (like if it wasn't obvious?). So I have a question. How often this kind of things happen? Because I didn't really wanna ruin my art with watermarks, but if theft happens a lot here, then I probably have no choice? Anyway, what's your experience with this kind of topic?

plaguednecromancer, whoa I've never thought it it THAT bad. I kinda always thought you had to be popular for this kind of thing to happen, but seems like here it's different.

plaguednecromancer Damn, that sounds bad. But it makes sense tbh. Stealing characters on site made for character creators. There's literally no fan art, so it makes the job easier. Your story is actually a good example, cause it shows that it can happen to literally anyone.

bandycam I looked at watermarks in your character's profiles and actually it doesn't look that bad. It's stylish, clear and definitely painful to erase. Thanks for the idea, I'll surely try this one!

I've had a character stolen from me once, and it was a really unpleasant experience, as the thief then traded my character to someone else offsite. I wouldn't have even known about it - by chance, someone remembered my username and the character in question, so they recognised that it was being stolen and reported back to me. I didn't think I'd ever be stolen from, because I fly quite low under the radar and keep to myself - I'm not popular by any means. It's really frustrating when you've owned a character for a long time and you know it's yours, but the person who was traded it doesn't believe you. Luckily, my TH proved that I'd owned the character for years, and so I eventually convinced them that the character was mine. Now I make sure to watermark all of my stuff, as annoying as it is, so that I hopefully don't have to go through it again.

Sprigs Oh god this is just sooo savage. It's good you even managed to know it happened. Glad you convinced the buyer that the character is yours, but I bet it was harsh for them too. Spending money on something you like and then discover that you just got fooled...

Honestly on that subject bc I just had this happen like yesterday where a main character of mine ended up being a stolen character only finding out after adding 100+ art to it I highly recommend watermarks you as the artist can still veiw the art without but it stops people from stealing the art and character if there's a big watermark across it iv had characters stolen off my th before and been on the other end recently of receiving a character I didn't know was stolen untill it was too late and I had put a crap tone of art and money into it. I make a habit to watermark my art when I finish it and also on toyhouse  bc the fear of characters being stolen from me agian
