chroniqueen okiedokie!! :D some general Orc Fun Facts!
- orcs are matriarchal; women & fem-aligned people are the collective heads of their communities, but the community is a collectivist culture - the entire village will contribute to raising children, settling disputes, and deciding communal rules.
- orcish communities can settle and adapt to most environments, although once a community has settled they are rarely truly driven out - the most well-known and biggest one in exulas is in anhae
- young orcs are usually tasked with a rite of passage, of sorts, when they’re on the verge of reaching maturity - this often involves leaving their community for a while to learn self-sufficiency and responsibility. this is called a ritok (in mebren, the most common orcish language) and while it isn't a strict rule anymore, a lot of orcish families still encourage it.
- kids aren’t really assigned genders, the kids decide - when this happens varies from kid to kid. orcs don’t care much about what gender they pick, but you can’t be head of your family unless you’re a woman or woman-adjacent.
- ^ on a similar note, jobs/roles/etcs aren't gatekept or anything, anyone can do anything so long as it's helpful in some way to the community, with the one exception of official leadership roles
- orcs are more likely to say a couple are good together if their names sound nice together, it’s considered good luck!
- surnames are matronymic; the mother’s name is adapted to the -inen suffix, although there are variations between different orc communities.
- kids are first given ‘fledgling names’, a bit like nicknames, and as they grow older and decide who they are, they're given/they get to choose their adulthood names -
naming ceremonies are a big thing, they’re community-wide celebrations & a lot of orcs that settled elsewhere are usually invited back for them
