Defluo! She's the personification of Death in one of my rp universes, and I adore her to pieces.
1. Where do they reside? Do they like it?
Defluo doesn't really have a set home, as she wanders the earth pretty much constantly, travelling from town to town and city to city, reaping souls along the way. They quite like it, tbh, since they enjoy chilling out in nature and watching the stars in-between all their Business Duties.
2. Are they an edgelord or a cinnamon roll?
Edgelord. 100%. Soft, quiet, and non-violent unless provoked, but an edgelord nonetheless.
3. Do they escort souls to the afterlife?
It's more that she collects souls that are no longer living their life to the fullest. Defluo has the power to sever soul from body and to place that soul inside the body of a glowing, blue butterfly, which is then bound to follow her on her travels. It's not quite the afterlife, persay, but more another way that a life could end, travelling under Death's watch and seeing the world before you truly pass on. After that, not even Defluo knows what comes next.
4. What do you think makes them different from other death gods/personifications of Death?
Defluo is still very unsure of her own identity as Death. They hide behind a mask of emotionlessness and logic, but Defluo is still a relatively young "god", and is still not sure she's living the life she was meant to. It doesn't help that they are generally disliked by the other entities like them, and thus really struggles to ask for help and is terrified to try doing anything new.
5. What is their temperament? What about personality types?
Defluo is very quiet and mysterious, and even has a bit of a dramatic flair, although they'd deny that last bit. She tends to speak very honestly and deliberately, and is very set in her ways and personal beliefs. They don't trust mortals or the other entities, and it takes a lot to get her to open up about... well. Anything. Especially when it comes to her "duties".
6. What are their hobbies?
Stargazing and storytelling. Defluo doesn't sleep, so she enjoys wandering deep into the wilderness and watching the heavens pass by. Also, Defluo's collected souls are her main source of company, so she talks to them A Lot. As such, she's memorized all their life stories, and enjoys recounting them to any mortals she takes a liking to.
7. What is an aesthetic that they would like?
Kinda dark, gothic, edgy vibes is what Defluo tends to gravitate towards.
8. What symbols do they have?
The blue butterfly, symbolizing the beauty that comes near the end of something's time. The candle, to symbolize the slow burning of life, and the smoke that follows after it finally runs out. Spirals, too.
9. What are their fave colors? Do they like the color black?
Defluo does like black and dark colors, but she also adores deep blues.
10. What are their fave animals? Are these animals symbollic for them? Are these animals considered omens in the world of the living in their universe?
As mentioned above, the butterfly is very important to Defluo. Since she never goes anywhere without The Swarm, thousands and thousands of collected souls in the bodies of butterflies, the blue butterfly is indeed considered a herald of her arrival (assuming you're in the know).
11. Is your oc associated with the seasons?
Defluo's power ebbs and flows with the seasons, with the height of her power occurring on Dia de Los Muertos. Her twin brother, Clio, experiences the height of his power in the spring/summer.
13. What is their alignment? Is this different from the alignment that mortals tend to assign to them?
They would like to see themselves as N, but they really tend more towards LG/LN, depending on any outside influences. Mortals that meet them with no prior knowledge tend to see them as cold and heartless, seeing them as more evil-aligned.
14. Is there a personification of Life in their universe? What do they think about this personification of Life and what does Life think of Death?
Clio, Defluo's twin brother, is the personification of Birth. Despite being polar opposites in personality, they're actually quite close, since they were both initially alienated by the other entities when they were created from the death of their parent, the personification of Cycles. They keep in touch during their travels, and they make efforts to visit each other and catch up from time to time. It's very soft and lovely and I adore them.
15. If they are from a universe where deities are a thing, are they perceived similarly or differently from other kinds of deities? Do they get along with other deities? Do mortals treat them the same or differently from other kinds of deities?
In Defluo's universe, they and other entities like them are generally kept secret from the general populace, only known to those who end up tangled in supernatural shenanigans. That being said, Defluo does tend to be treated differently from the other entities, partly due to the fact that they are Death, and partly because of the persona they've used to cope. They don't really get along with most of the other entities except for a select few, and they aren't usually well-received by mortals unless a cult's involved.
16. If they are perceived as or act as any kind of antagonist, is this reputation deserved? Is their title of antagonist acquired from a means other than being a personification of death? If they are an antagonist, are they closer to a traditional villain who enjoys destruction, or are they more like an antivillain who represents death as one of the forces of nature/a necessary part of the cycle of life and death?
Defluo is seen as antagonistic as many, and they do somewhat deserve it. She does go around killing innocent people, and not always the old or sick. Not to mention, people do sometimes get caught in the crossfire of her cults, which she doesn't police nearly as much as she should because "the living aren't her concern". However, Defluo does have a good heart despite this, and certainly does not wish death or destruction on those who don't deserve it. I'd say she's more a morally grey character than anything else.
17. Do they have other duties besides being a personification of death? If they are a deity of death, are they a deity associated with other things as well?
I suppose it's worth mentioning that Defluo is the personification of Death, but more broadly The End Of Things. She doesn't just draw power from the passing of mortal souls, but also the "deaths" of objects or ideas, but to a lesser extent.
18. When mortals portray a personification of death in art/writing/etc how closely does this interpretation match your character? Are there any noticeable differences or similarities? Do they look similar?
The scythe is certainly a motif that comes from Defluo's main weapon, and there are depictions of Death as smoke or ash, which may somewhat resemble her head. Defluo's cults tend to be responsible for more accurate depictions, particularly ones featuring butterfly wings and spirals.
19. What are some interesting powers/abilities/traits that they have? Do they have magical powers? What kind of magic do they know?
As well as the ability to sever the soul from the body, Defluo actually possesses the ability to reforge the connection using wax from an enchanted candle. Additionally, she can see and hear through the senses of her butterfly companions, and can, as one might expect, fly.
