I am very (well, sort of very?) invested in my culture (im V italian) and even though i dont speak italian i can understand 90% of conversations that happen in it and a good chunk of written stuff (but I have to say it out loud in my head first to understand written italian lol)

Coincidentally, I'm the same way with Vietnamese. :^) It was my first language, but after attending preschool with zero knowledge about English, my parents began teaching it to me by speaking it at home... then it just became the norm, and I never had a chance to practice after. I still understand basically all of it (except slang and swear words because my parents are cultured people *cough* and don't do that kind of thing), but it takes me a long time to think of a sentence to speak. Plus, my accent sucks... maybe one day, I'll be able to teach it to myself again.
