Poor Service:

  • Taking months on commissions with no contact.
  • Attempting to take more commissions while they still have unfinished owed work and not being truthful about it
  • Claiming they will not offer refunds due to a TOS that is not shown/ accessible to the public through their thread or toyhouse profile
  • Spending clients money before finishing their owed work.

Several months back I commissioned BarryBBusy for two colour busts.  They were $6 together.  The requested characters were accepted and I sent the money and a tip.

After one month a set of 6 character bust sketches were posted, I approved mine and then the artist gave no further communication about my commission.

It wasn't until another user showed concern that their commission hadn't been finished that the artist responded.  They claimed they would finish the pieces in a timely manner then failed to deliver them.

I'm sympathetic to anyone who is dealing with what chaos the worlds fallen into in the wake of the virus, but these were all from long before the virus outbreak, as well I found out from a user that will remain anonymous, that they had opened up commissions ad customs on deviantart in the last month.  I find this in poor practice as they left people waiting here and then saw they apparently owe even more art on an unknown twitter.  They posted an update on the thread of a commission completely unrelated to their owed queue and that left me wondering just how much art they owe.  After making it clear I would like my commissions within the week (something I don't find to be too much to ask seeing as one is already sketch and they are flat coloured busts and it has been several months) they said they would try to have it done but they had other things to do.

They claimed they didn't take more commissions, but it was that no one bought from their new commissions as well as, before they edited their thread, it was marked as Open.  I decided I no longer wanted the art.

I'm glad I decided to get screengrabs before I waited on their reply as, in the end, they blocked me.  I'm not sure what their last reply was, but someone let me know that they claimed they didn't offer refunds.  I was never given a TOS on the commission thread, nor is there one anywhere on their TH page. Since they don't link their deviantart I believe I did my due diligence looking for it beforehand and do not accept this claim.

I have since filed for a refund and am waiting on paypal.

UPDATE:
A user has come forward with a screenshot showing that BarryBBusy does offer refunds and did so in the last several months.  The same user was also kind enough to have shown me what was posted after I was blocked.

Update 2:
Another anon has come forward with links to other commissions on TH where they were taking more commissions.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

They were kind enough to provide links to provide links to other unfinished commission lists on deviantart.  These predate my commission so I did not link them here, but if others would find this relevant I can add them below.

Update 3:

They decided to post about the incident on twitter, skewing the facts and speculating that I decide to rush the people I commission.  Overall they're behaving very poorly and proving in their tweets that they made up a TOS after they were commissioned by myself and other, that it is incomplete and that they are attempting to retroactively claim violation of TOS by my asking for a refund.  I have already escalated the refund as they refuse to refund me.  I will update when paypal decides what to do.  Twitter posts are under the cut and their twitter handle has been added at the top of this post.  Referring to your customers in public, even when you've had a disagreement is really flooring me.

22131603_qI2SMnJLBsYYthl.png

Their secondary twitter has been added showing that they've been doing and posting personal art while claiming they haven't had time to work on commissions, sent to me by an anon user through DMs.   They are now, finally, working and posting art that is owed though I'm unsure of the status of their toyhouse queues and have no wish to follow up the matter.  Feel free to post below, though I ask that you not DM me about it as I find the matter beyond what I'm looking to do with this review.

Now they are putting out adopts to repay me, so they have spent the money I sent before they completed my or others commissions.  I do think that putting out adopts is better then taking on more commissions but it's still a slap that they've already spent everyone's money and and just now are finally putting out work for others after being called out.  They have had time to do multiple personal pieces and adopts.  Even only doing one piece a week from the initial customer orders would have seen the bust queue finished by now.

As well they are claiming to being in the red from this refund.  If they are referring to me, I haven't received a refund, so they can not be in the red from me, so they are either being charged back by others or are not telling the truth.

Update: I have received my refund and will not be updating this service review thread further.  Please feel free to post your own experiences here.  I ask that you don't PM me about yours unless it is relevant to the issue I've personally had with BarryBBusy.

Candicorn-art

You can put 'no refunds' in a TOS all you like, but you can't legally refuse to refund money when you did not provide the service you were paid for.

Since they did do some work, I personally would've asked for a partial refund. But considering they blocked you ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

SoraDeathEater

super anxious writing this... but thank you..

I am one other user who has asked for a refund, uhmm but mine was about 4 days after I commissioned them from one of their threads. x.x Sounds like i jumped the gun but I had gotten into contact with previous clients who were waiting for their commissions and found out they had not gotten art despite it being 4 months (at the time.. they waited since november, not sure if theyved recieved the art yet. Im not keeping track) x.x And so this was my encounter when asking for the refund:

1 - me asking if i could have a refund due to finding their long queue (it wasnt a list mind you. I had to dig through their da, since i like to hype myself up with looking at art from an artist i buy from.. but then found their commission journals with unfilled art claims).. they then kinda assumed i constantly bail on artists.. which i do Not. I hate asking for refunds and i am extremely patient when it comes to commissions (honestly still waiting on a commission from last year... but ive bought from them in the past which i know they take a while!)

2 - i even mention i am fine with waiting for the art or refund... they chose the latter.. i didnt push for a refund.. Honestly hoped theyd do the art... but is fine

3 - they mention a list here, but it only includes the list that SquidsInTheAttic commission is from.. NOT the DA and apparently twitter commissions (the commission thread shows they accept twitter commissioms too... i wasnt aware of that) plus i had told them here that they didnt have a public TOS... so i, and obviously a few more users, dont know about the no refund policy...

4 - my refund... i did recieve my refund.. but after this it left me a very sour feeling in my gut and heart.. I do like their art... but the long queue and no updates unless asked by clients just makes me feel... icky? Im not too sure how to describe it...

Once again i dont usually do these... ;n; im sorry if anything is wrong. I am extremely anxious typing all this.. uhh If you have any questions please ask? Its ok to ping me... Im just providing my experience... ;u;

I can understand how anxiety inducing it is to come forward to speak about your negative experiences so I want to thank you for coming forward and also offer my support to you as well.  I don't think you jumped the gun asking for your money back after finding out that others had been waiting that long.  As I've linked above, they have given at least one refund in the past without mention of a TOS.  They can't claim something is against their TOS if they don't have them written down and accessible to their buyers.  There's no legal support for their refusal to refund.

I'm sorry you went through this and please know you definitely didn't do anything wrong.

SoraDeathEater

;u; oh my goodness thank you.. i had been dreading the whole refund as a whole at first, like "was i wrong???" Then seeing that they had a few other commissiom threads scared me so badly that i felt it was for the best.. I commission a lot of users on here that it kinda hit hard when they slightly accused me of doing this often.. because i dont ;n; i stick to my artists that i constantly buy from because its nice. I also like commissioning others since its nice to be able to see all the styles my characters can be in! And having that said to me hurt?? I would never request a refund, so when i did this I felt bad? Though seeing as they havent finished the art from other threads... I feel it was for the best.. I even mentioned that i woukdnt mind waiting for the art... but they chose the refund route.. I do want everyone else gets their art! (But if it comes to it... i wish that they can get their refund if needed.)

SquidsInTheAttic

I understand completely, their accusation that I was a bad customer for putting my foot down and not being able to treat them as a human smacks of gaslighting.  I have asked for refunds in the past, but again, it's because there is zero communication and no WIP given for months at a time with long lists that are not worked on.

I hope people can be refunded as well.  It's not okay what they're doing.  If they are busy they shouldn't have been taking so many commissions and continue to try and take more.  Blaming us for being wrong is a poor meathod to escape having to admit they've been doing something wrong and honestly it's not okay.

In terms of an update for this thread thread, I've been given screenshots for proof that they did not have any visible TOS for either art thread or on their user profile and so they can not claim 'no refunds'.

To Naughty Savage: I didn't ask for a partial refund as, it was a quarter to a third of the work done on one piece so it would be about 75 cents or a dollar and honestly that felt more like a slap in the face then asking for the full ten dollars.

Hi, I initially wasn't going to make a post and just move on with my life about this, but now that there's a thread... might as well.

I posted a journal seeking commissions on Jan 22 2020, and Barry almost immediately commented offering their services. (comment thread archive)
As you can see from the comments, I purchased a headshot the same day, and they accepted my order. I didn't recieve a wip until Feb 14 2020, all the while I had been consistently asking for updates because Barry had been actively posting. I thought "ok cool, I have a wip so hopefully this'll be done soon!" but I was ghosted again until I re-engaged on March 14 2020. It's important to note that Barry always got back to me incredibly quickly (same day), but NEVER engaged, except to send me the wip. When March 22 2020 rolled around, I decided I had waited long enough and was going to get a partial refund. 2 months was a very long time for me to wait with dodgy replies for a headshot, so I was fed up. Originally Barry was going to have me wait until the following week, but I received my refund the same day and my interaction was over. I was very annoyed and disappointed, I expected people who were offering on my journal to actually be able to deliver but I left it at that and moved on.

It's very dodgy that Barry has began to refuse refunds, but I feel like it's due to the fact that they spend money before finishing the art (I mean... they didn't have my money and it was only $3.) I don't recommend them to anyone I know and would advise people to avoid working with them until they get their act together, but that's just me.

SoraDeathEater

Oh yeah! Thats something i didnt notice :o they sent my refund through goods and services too rather than refunding it. Is it even possible to refund for the full amount (i paid $10.. yet got 9? I mean i dont care xD im more curious if theres even an option on paypal to refund the full amount).

Edit: thank you for answering my question c: i did not know that

MysticMinka

I am neutral on this matter but I do want to say that there is a refund option on PayPal. You have to find the specific transaction and hit refund. It takes a few days to process.

Its very disheartening reading the Twitter statuses :/ I really dont understand how they can say they are being rushed when you have been waiting for months :c it shouldnt be considered rushing when they did have a lot more time before to work on it plus you commissioned them before the whole pandemic started :/ so its not necessarily an excuse i mean other than school :c yeah... but to say that youre rushing them after how long youve been waiting for is sorta kinda irresponsible(??? Sorry x.x lack of better wording).. and i get no one commented on the commissions threads.. but the fact they even opened more afterwards in hopes of getting more commissions is the thing that urks me in a sense.. yeah no one commented on them but what if people did? Would they have accepted them all :c thats the thing that really hurts.. How theyre trying to throw it back at you though they said "I told them i would no longer be working on their commission" and then after you asked for a refund.. did this happen? Cause it looks like they said they would work on it and then you asked for the refund :o sorry if i dont make any sense x.x still anxious about all of this..

Edited to add: Looking at their twitter it actually makes me slightly happier to see they are now doing more commissions... whereas before theyve been doing personal art (mainly sketches but sometimes bigger stuff) and adopts... so its nice to see commissions are being worked on :o

Oh lmao -- I too ordered from Barry. Back in December 10th in 2019 they posted emergency bust commissions in the OC server that i admin. I enjoyed their artwork and, in fairness, they seemed to be very quick about finishing commissions/generally doing artwork at the time. As of today I have only received 1 out of the 3 busts I bought despite having approved all three sketches.
( I should note that I did not receive all 3 sketches at the same time. The last two sketches I have seen came at least a month after the first bust/icon was done. With prompting )

Usually I am extremely patience with artists. I would wait a week to several weeks to a month before asking Barry about updates on my commissions, and each time Barry would apologize and either "Promise to get it done tonight" ( then fall asleep and promise to get it done the next day ),or "Promise to get it done within the week". I have not received my last two bust/icons despite multiple promptings with the same promises of it being finished ASAP.

The whole situation is very frustrating, considering that I would watch them advertise their commissions and adopts in my own server, and even post finished artwork ( whether or not it was commissioned or not, I do not know ).

Rather recently they did offer me a refund ( which I assume comes from your situation ), but I declined it as I had already seen the last two sketches and I believe my commission was $4 so it did not feel right to me nor was it enough money to care for a refund (in my opinion).

While I am fairly certain that Barry is around teenage years ( I can not confirm nor deny this ) -- I honestly can not recommend them to others at this current point in time. Overall they have show me: lack of communication in an artist reaching out to the commissioner, honesty ( i.e failing to meet their own deadlines / potentially lying about these deadlines they set themselves on multiple occasions ), and generally just poor practices. I have even spoken privately to friends that I would not recommend Barry after everything they have done, though I hope they are able to get a stable footing and be able to grow from this experience!

Like the majority of us, I would like my finished artwork and just hope that Barry is able to learn from this situation and show people they can be trusted. I genuinely love their artwork and would like to commission them again, but at this point in time I cannot.
Here are the screenshots of our DMs ( https://sta.sh/29su4cze7hm ). I will admit to not capturing certain parts of our dms ( like some sketch updates ), You can also see that Barry DID tell me they couldn't do one of the original characters and we very easily picked a new character they believed they could do - which is awesome and amazing, showing already some good communication that I wish continued.

Update Today ( around 2:20 pm PST ) I did receive my second icon! Barry has informed me that my last one needs to be resketched because they lost the file, and I appreciate the communication and updates on my last commissions ( along with the artwork of my old girl ! )
Barry has also mentioned they are working on finishing other commissions!

Update 2 As of 6:30 pm on May 5th all of my commissioned pieces have been finished and given to me.

Update 3 Barry has asked for me to inform SquidsInTheAttic ( sorry for the mention !! ) that the alt twitter account linked is a roleplay account. Here is the direct message: https://sta.sh/01gcraovz2yy
SquidsInTheAttic

Thank you from the update from them, I am fully aware it's an RP account.  The link was given to me by another user and has been included to show proof of posting multiple personal art pieces to allow others to see that, while they claim they are unable to use a computer for months to work on or post commissions, they are able to make and post art for their RP account and on their main account.

Also I very much appreciate that you are passing on messages for them, but if they approach you in the future please let them know to contact me directly.  There's no reason for them to go through a third party that isn't connected to the issue at hand.

Sorry for the late reply, the ping didn't work since you edited the comment and for some reason that doesn't ping people

[EDIT] I would also like to update, that, in spite of selling both adoptable for a refund, I have not received any money.
