I think there's still people out there who like species for the designs, probably why species like terraliens r still going strong lmfao.
I personally like species with lore or being a "roleplay fandom" because I wouldn't know how to use my species charas otherwise!! Rather than having a pretty character just sit there doing nothing, I could actually put it in a world with its kind and have fun with my characters if the species' gameplay/lore aspects are good. I guess I just rather do some collaborative world-building instead of making up my own world for my characters aha. I don't even care if it's technically not a closed species at that point, arpgs and lore heavy species are just pretty fun if you're into those
I agree species did have changed!! although I remember species arpgs are a pretty old thing too, I don't remember any of the older ones having significantly indepth lore. but it's certainly a welcome change, I agree
